GULBENKIAN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR VISITING PROFESSORSHIPS IN THE HUMANITIES (link)

Call for applications open to Portuguese Higher Education Institutions

  

Eligibility:
Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEI) wishing to host visiting professors who are academics affiliated with foreign universities, and who possess an outstanding academic record with recognized excellence in the field of the Humanities. They must be senior researchers (well-established scholars) with demonstrated experience and significant scholarly output in the Humanities.

The Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies is open to expressions of interest from academics affiliated with foreign universities in the areas in which professors from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra teach and  conduct research: Classical Studies; Heritage, History and Cultures of Food; Philosophy; Music Studies.

 

The centre has been ranked as an 'Excellent' research centre by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. It hosts a number of international researchers, Visiting Professors (including 5 Gulbenkian Visiting Professors in the Humanities in the 3 previous editions) and funded projects, in addition to the Celtic Conference in Classics, the largest gathering of classicists in Europe. You are welcome to watch our brief presentation video to find out more about us.

  

Expressions of interest are accepted until September 4, to the email address of Professor Carmen Soares, Scientific Coordinator of the CECH (cech.car...@gmail.com). The final deadline for full applications is September 30 5 PM (Lisbon time)

 

For this expression of interest we request a brief CV of the visiting Professor, as well as:

1) A brief description of the visiting professor’s academic merit, demonstrating their recognition and leadership status in their field of research (200 words);


2) A brief description of how the proposed visit may contribute to strengthening the capacities of the host institution (200 words);


3) A list of the activities planned to be carried out by the visiting professor, including at least one seminar, course or intensive course (200 words).

Following this expression of interest, applicants will be notified and those chosen to apply with CECH’s support will be requested to provide the remaining elements needed to submit the full application.

 

Grant amounts:

Monthly fee: €4000.00 + One-off support for travel and installation: €4000.00

 

Visiting period:
Grants are awarded directly to Visiting Professors for visits of a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 9 months. The visit must start no within 12 months of the approval of the application.


Submission of applications:
Applications must be made on behalf of the Portuguese HEI, by the host Professor who will be responsible for coordinating the visit.


To complete the application, candidates will also need to indicate the provisional dates of their visit and send a letter of commitment.


Selection criteria:
a) academic merit of the visitor's research and/or teaching;
b) potential to make a contribute substantially to the capacities of the Portuguese institution;
c) specificity and degree of organization of the proposed programme of activities for the visit

Collaborative research alone is not a selection factor. Emphasis should be placed on the dissemination and sharing of capacities and knowledge that will be valuable to the host institution.
