Call for Proposals: Special Issues

BioSocieties

2026 Round

The Editorial Team of BioSocieties invites proposals for Special Issues to be published in 2027–2028. We welcome intellectually ambitious collections that advance debates at the intersections of the life sciences, biomedicine, biotechnology, and the social sciences.

Submission Process

Scholars interested in guest-editing a Special Issue should submit a proposal by 1 October 2026.

Proposals should be sent by email to the Managing Editor, Robbin Jeffries Hein, robbinj...@ucla.edu

Your proposal should include:

  • Working title of the proposed Special Issue
  • Names, affiliations, and short biographies (100 words each) of the proposed guest editors
  • A 1000-word overview, outlining the thematic focus and conceptual framing, scholarly contribution, and significance for BioSocieties and the broader interdisciplinary study of the biosciences
  • The names, affiliations, and short abstracts (150–200 words each) for a minimum of seven substantive contributions, plus an introduction.

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be assessed on the basis of:

  1. Scholarly quality and coherence
  2. The extent to which the collection will contribute to critical scholarship investigating the relationships between the life sciences and society.
  3. The diversity of the contributors, in terms of gender, international location, and career stage.

The Editorial Team will select one or two proposals to proceed as a Special Issue.

Timeline

  • November 2026 – Notification of selected proposal(s)
  • The completed Special Issue manuscripts must be submitted for peer review by 1 April 2027
  • Individual manuscripts should not exceed 10,000 words, inclusive of references and notes
  • Accepted articles will be published OnlineFirst ahead of the full Special Issue, which is anticipated for publication in 2027–2028
