Dear all,
We are happy to open a call for a travel grant of $500 USD to attend
'Confluences in Aquatic Science and Technology Studies', which will take
place at the Lorentz Centre in Leiden (The Netherlands) between the 6th and
10th of July 2026. This has been kindly provided by the Off-Year Workshop
fund of the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social
Studies of Biology (ISHPSSB). 'Science and Technology Studies' here is
understood very broadly to include philosophical, historical and social
approaches.
The workshop
The workshop aims to collectively identify core themes and open questions
emerging from participants' research on aquatic (e.g. marine, freshwater)
environments to develop a more focused analytical and dialogic approach that
helps make sense of the diversity of this research and bridge disconnections
within it. The program includes co-writing sessions, development of
conceptual thinking, keynote lectures, a field trip, networking, and
socialization to strengthen ties between attendants. During the meeting,
participants will develop a proposal for an experimental open-access book
draft and establish the basis an aquatic STS network (including a network
website).
Eligibility & criteria
We welcome applications from Early Career Scholars working on issues related
to the aquatic sciences from the perspective of philosophy, history or
social studies of science.
* Applicants should be PhD students or postdocs who did not defend
more than three years ago at the time of application.
* The main criteria for selection will be a clear connection between
the work of the applicant and the topic of the workshop.
* Recipients of the award should be members of ISHPSSB
