Call for Abstracts: ZEMO-Online Workshop on New Perspectives in the Philosophy of Empathy
Philosophical debates on empathy have developed in numerous directions. There is a multitude of voices, some focussing on historical accounts, others connecting closely to the most recent psychological research; some scholars work in a phenomenological tradition, others use methods of analytic philosophy. Topics also vary widely, from epistemic problems in accessing the mental life of others to the significance of empathy for moral agency; from embodiment and interactionism about empathy to evolutionary perspectives or the psychopathology of empathy. There are also closely related phenomena, such as imagination, sympathy, care, fellow-feeling, or interpersonal understanding, which relate in numerous possible ways to empathy research.
We invite abstracts (up to 500 words) for papers to be presented at a ZEMO online workshop on New Perspectives in the Philosophy of Empathy in autumn 2026 (exact date tbd together with all participants). The workshop has an inclusive approach, inviting contributions from all relevant areas and philosophical traditions. The main purpose is to create a forum for new voices – emerging scholars – and to enable cross-fertilisation between different contexts of debate.
The workshop is organised by Thomas Schramme (Liverpool) in close collaboration with Michael Kühler (Dortmund), co-editor of the Journal for Ethics and Moral Philosophy (Zeitschrift für Ethik und Moralphilosophie, ZEMO), an academic journal that publishes articles in German and English. The workshop is intended to serve as a starting point for a corresponding topical collection published in ZEMO.
The submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the organisers, and the authors of the selected abstracts will be invited to submit a draft paper. All draft papers will be pre-circulated to participants and will therefore need to be ready a few weeks before the event (exact date tbd). All draft papers will then be discussed in depth at the online workshop. The aim is to provide constructive feedback and suggestions for revising the papers. The revised papers will then be subjected to the journal’s regular peer review process and, if accepted, published as part of the topical collection.
The deadline for submission of abstracts (up to 500 words) is 31 March 2026
We look forward to receiving your abstracts.
