Applications are open for the CIFAS Field School in Ethnographic Research Methods, taking place in New York City in July 2026.

The CIFAS Field School is an intensive, hands-on training program designed for students, researchers, and professionals who wish to develop or strengthen their skills in ethnographic research. The course offers participants the opportunity to learn ethnographic methods through a combination of seminars, guided fieldwork, collaborative analysis, and individualized feedback.

The program is especially relevant for those working in anthropology, sociology, education, public health, urban studies, design, architecture, media studies, development studies, environmental studies, social work, and other fields that use qualitative and ethnographic approaches to understand social life.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop practical skills in ethnographic observation, interviewing, fieldnote writing, and qualitative analysis; engage with methodological and ethical questions in ethnographic research; conduct supervised fieldwork in New York City; receive feedback on research design, fieldwork strategies, and analytical interpretation; and join an international learning community of scholars, students, and practitioners interested in ethnographic inquiry.

The course is open to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, independent researchers, and professionals.

The deadline for full consideration is May 15, 2026. Applications received after that date may be considered if space remains available.
