Very happy to support and share this initiative—especially in light of increasing travel restrictions and the structural barriers faced by many excellent scholars and students in the MENA region. I hope this summer school fosters lasting opportunities for participants to meet, exchange ideas, and continue their work together beyond this event.

DATA FOR HUMANS : Ethics and Uses of Data
🗓️ September 7–11, 2025
📍 Deir al Qamar, Lebanon (1h from Beirut)
Data for Humans is an intensive, interdisciplinary summer school for early-career researchers in philosophy and related areas who want to shape the future of data-related practices. As data become richer, what does it mean to be also more responsible? How to design data practices that are fair, interpretable, and shareable across contexts and communities? Are data just behaviourally reductive or can they work for good and help approach meaning, context, or cultural nuance? What if we care not just about how we measure cognition, but what our measures mean, and how ethically we use them?
Hosted in the mountains of Lebanon, this summer school is meant to reach to scholars and students whose access to conferences in Europe or the US is becoming increasingly difficult, if not sometimes impossible. It will combine:
Hands-on introductory sessions with state-of-the-art specific issues with new types of human data (neurotechnologies, textual data)
Ethical and philosophical reflection on how to handle data ethically and meaningfully
Mentorship and collaborative exchange across disciplines
A retreat-like setting for focused discussion and connection.
Organised in cooperation with the MENA Association for the Study of Mind

PhD students, postdocs, Master’s students, and researchers in philosophy, as well as cognitive science, linguistics, education, and data ethics from Lebanon and MENA region. Practitioners and applicants from low-resource or underrepresented regions are especially welcome.
