We are pleased to announce SQUARE 9  to be held at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Montréal, Canada, June 22–26, 2026.

This is the 9th edition of the World Congress on the Square of Opposition after very successful previous editions in Montreux, Switzerland 2007; Corte, Corsica 2010; Beirut, Lebanon 2012; Vatican, 2014; Easter Island, 2016; Crete, 2018; Leuven, Belgium 2022; San Jose, Costa Rica, 2024. 

 

SQUARE is a unique interdisciplinary event bringing together logicians, philosophers, mathematicians, semioticians, computer scientists, artists, to explore the many facets of the Square of Opposition and its modern developments.

 

Topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Classical and non-classical squares
  • Logical geometry (hexagons, cubes, beyond)
  • Philosophical and historical perspectives
  • Applications in cognition, language, and AI
  • Interdisciplinary and creative approaches

Submission deadline: April 17, 2026

This time of year is one of the very best moments to be in Montréal.
(A) On Wednesday, June 24, the city celebrates the Fête de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the national holiday of Québec. This public holiday will offer a pleasant break in the middle of our event, which begins on Monday, June 22.
(B) Immediately afterwards, from June 25 to July 4, Montréal hosts its world-famous International Jazz Festival, one of the largest and most vibrant music festivals in the world.
It is worth noting that the first edition of SQUARE took place in Montreux in 2007, where we organized a jazz performance inspired by the Square of Opposition:
