Named after the Italian physician Santorio Santori (1561-1636), this biannual award is designed to support scholarly excellence in intellectual history and to promote the best PhD theses in the history of medicine and science, with a particular focus
on Europe and the Mediterranean, throughout the period 500-1800.
PhD students and early-career scholars of all nationalities within six years of their viva are welcome to apply. An indicative list of fields of study eligible for the Santorio Award

When submitting their work, applicants must specify the original language in which their dissertation has been written. In addition, they must select one referee, preferably their PhD supervisor, and attach the referee's letter of recommendation to the application.
Recipients of the award will receive a cash prize of €1,500 for first place, as well as a medal, a diploma and publication in the Palgrave Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Medicine series (PSMEMM) for the top two works.
