Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to contribute to a stimulating discussion on hydrogen imaginaries and their evolving trajectories at the STS NL Conference (University of Twente, 15–17 April 2026).

Our panel (#18): “Revisiting the Hydrogen Utopia: Failures, Reorientations, and Emerging Visions” examines how hydrogen has been imagined as a cornerstone of global decarbonization and as part of an industrial utopia. National strategies and corporate roadmaps often depict hydrogen as enabling a future where industry can thrive with minimal emissions. Yet, these visions face legal, technical, and social challenges, and their sustainability is increasingly questioned. We invite reflections on how hydrogen imaginaries are being reshaped, adapted, or contested as projects evolve.

We are interested in contributions that may explore (but are not limited to) the following themes:
• Reorientations and new trajectories of hydrogen projects
• Marginalized voices and local resistance
• Shifting promises and blocked alternatives
• Utopian and dystopian visions shaping discourse and policy

Please submit your proposals via the conference website (deadline: January 7):

We welcome your contributions and kindly encourage you to share this call with colleagues who might be interested.

All the best,

Alison Lesdos (Université Grenoble Alpes), Filip Rozborski (Graz University of Technology / Maastricht University)
