The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim) is looking for two 3-year PhD fellows in Philosophy of Physics

  • The fellowships are part of the project “Entanglement Metaphysics without Spacetime” led by Dr. Rasmus Jaksland.
  • The fellowships are fully funded with the normal gross salary being NOK 550 800,- per annum.
  • The employment period is 3 years during which the fellows are expected to write a doctoral dissertation.
  • The application deadlines are, respectively, June 05 and June 10, 2026.

More about the fellowships:

Are you interested in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of philosophy and physics? Then you might be the candidate we are looking for. These PhD fellowships are associated with the interdisciplinary research project “Entanglement Metaphysics without Spacetime” (EMwiS). The aim of metaphysics is to give an account of how the world fundamentally is, and many metaphysical theories tacitly assume the fundamental existence of space and time. EMwiS is motivated by the growing body of work in theoretical physics suggesting that spatiotemporal structure may be derivative rather than fundamental. EMwiS explores whether this calls for a corresponding revision at the level of metaphysics: one in which quantum entanglement replaces the foundational role of spacetime has had in explaining physical order, connectedness, and world structure.

The fellowships are fully funded and your gross salary will normally be NOK 550 800,- per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary. The employment period is 3 years for the doctoral work. The fellowships come with generous travel funds that can, for instance, be used for international conferences and research stays abroad.

Feel free to contact the project PI, Rasmus Jaksland (rasmus....@ntnu.no), if you have any questions about the fellowships.
