PhD Course Design for Human Autonomy

Date: Monday, 10 February 2025 – Friday, 14 February 2025

Location: TU Delft, the Netherlands

Explore the relationship between technology and human autonomy in this PhD course, focusing on how technology can both enhance and undermine autonomy. Topics include designing for human autonomy in areas like AI, robotics, health and neurotechnology and with a focus on designing for values.

Lecturers include Ibo van de Poel (TU Delft), Joel Anderson (Utrecht University), Kathrin Bednar (TU Eindhoven), Marina Bos-de Vos (TU Delft), Janna van Grunsven (TU Delft), Steffen Steinert (TU Delft), Michael Klenk (TU Delft), and Stephen Rainey (TU Delft).

After the course you will have the skills and knowledge to:

  • Understand the relation between technology, values, and human autonomy.
  • Argue why technology can or cannot embody values (and if so how).
  • Explain basic notions of values and human autonomy within philosophy and other relevant disciplines.
  • Differentiate main approaches to designing for human autonomy.
  • Characterize and discuss ‘value conflict’ and ‘value change’ and understand the implications of these phenomena for designing for values and designing for human autonomy.
  • Evaluate technology in terms of human autonomy.

This course is organized by OZSW, 4TU Ethics, and the Delft Design for Values Institute.

Registration: https://www.ozsw.nl/activity/design-for-human-autonomy/2025-02-10/  (registration will be open as 12 November 2024)

Explore the relationship between technology and human well-being in this PhD course, focusing on how we can design technology for human well-being. Topics include different notions of well-being, designing for human capabilities and subjective well-being with attention for, among others, digital and health technologies. The course also includes an introduction in the design for values approach.

Lecturers include Ibo van de Poel (TU Delft), Pieter Desmet (TU Delft), Naomi Jacobs (University of Twente), Matthew Dennis (TU Eindhoven), Steffen Steinert (TU Delft), Iluia Lefter (TU Delft) and others.
