Call for abstracts

Advanced technologies such as those based on AI systems are increasingly becoming integrated into our practices of characterising, diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. Importantly, such technologies are deemed to hold a significant impact on our mental health, influencing our mental wellbeing in various ways.

This scenario invites pressing philosophical questions: what analytical categories are best suited to capture the impact of digital technologies of our mental health? And what is the impact that digital technologies have over our mental wellbeing? Are these technologies unique in having such an impact - or in the extent of such an impact - or are we living in a largely unexceptional period of technological change? How should we design digital technologies such that they are conducive of our well-being? How do these technologies impact and modify our self-conception, and the way in which we take care of our wellbeing?

This two-day, in person workshop brings together leading researchers to explore and analyse the philosophical ramifications of these questions. It will feature four prominent keynote speakers and a call for papers.

We invite the submission of abstracts on these and related issues. An incomplete list of the issues we wish to explore includes:

  • The social epistemology of digital technologies
  • What do digital technologies assume about our minds and our mental health
  • The relationship between digital technologies and 4E cognition, especially in relation
  • to accounts of psychopathology
  • The concepts and practices of digital wellbeing
  • Ethical requirements and design principles for wellbeing-conducive digital technologies
  • The role of digital technologies in the acquisition of self-knowledge
  • The (ir)reality of digital agents and digital persons
  • (Para)social relationships with digital agents and persons
  • What do digital technologies assume about our minds and our mental health

Abstract should be anonymized, and no longer than 1000 words. Abstracts should also include around 10 indicative references (not counting towards the word limit). The material covered by the abstract should be suitable for a 40 minute presentation followed by a 20 minute Q&A

To submit your abstract, please make use of the following form: https://forms.gle/cna5ox8WbgnmnTe98

Attendees are welcome but encouraged to reach out beforehand to ensure that we can accommodate the numbers.

Deadline for submission: October 5th

Organising committee: Benedetta Cogo (University of Wollongong), Marco Facchin (Universiteit Antwerpen), Sascha Fink (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), Ian Robertson (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg)

This event is co-funded by the Centre for Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence Research (PAIR: http://pair.fau.eu) and the EU ERANET NEURON-funded project PSYTRANS.
