The Joint Commission (JC) of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science (IUHPST) is organizing a symposium at the conference History and Philosophy of Science: Past, Present, and Future (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, 24 - 26 June 2026). The topic of the symposium is “HPS across borders”:

The integrated history and philosophy of science is fundamentally interdisciplinary, crossing divides between academic fields, different kinds of knowledge systems, and even different geographical regions and social groups. We seek for significant contributions to HPS methodology, with special attention to the use of HPS to reach across borders in order to foster dialogue and promote mutual understanding.

We invite 500-word abstracts addressing this topic for submission to our symposium. Abstracts may consider questions including (but not limited to):

  • What ought the limits of integrated HPS to be? Should we broaden its scope to include other disciplinary perspectives, such as sociological ones?
  • How can HPS be extended to include traditionally excluded knowledge systems, such as Indigenous worldviews and traditional medical practices?
  • What new insights can HPS scholars gain by expanding their focus beyond eras typically under study?
  • In light of recent global political and technological shifts, has the pedagogical role of HPS within the university changed? What future roles for HPS pedagogy can we envision?

Abstracts should be emailed to jointcommis...@gmail.com by December 31st (please write “IUHPST symposium at HKUST” in the subject of the email). Up to four abstracts will be selected for the symposium.

Participants of the symposium will be required to register as all other speakers of the conference. At least one author for each contribution must be willing to present in-person at the History and Philosophy of Science: Past, Present, and Future conference in Hong Kong. Early-career or underfunded scholars will be eligible for a grant to subsidize travel expenses.

Authors should also consider submitting their full paper to the biennial Essay Prize that the JC organizes to encourage fresh methodological thinking in History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) as an integrated discipline. The 2027 Essay Prize will be on the same topic of the symposium, and the submission deadline will be January 15th, 2027.

Please contact Michele Luchetti (michele....@uni-bielefeld.de), Rebecca Jackson (rebecca...@alumni.iu.edu) or Dubian Cañas (dubiand...@gmail.com) if you have any questions.
