We welcome abstracts submitted to our Combined Format Open Panel for the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S) conference, Toronto, October 7-10, 2026 
Open Panel #60: STS and Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) 
Panel organizers: Jill Lazenby, Vera Pavri and James Elwick, Department of Science, Technology & Society, York University 
Keywords: science communication, university-society relations 
This open panel addresses how STS topics, teaching materials, courses, and programming can make education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) more effective.  We welcome multiple formats (ex. papers, teaching demonstrations, workshops, discussion panels, historical recreations of past experiments, etc.). Topics may include, but are not limited to, STS in courses for non-science majors, teaching the “nature of science”, Decolonization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in STEM education, public understanding of science and technology, misinformation about science, scientific misconduct and public trust, public engagement with science, and the nature of science literacy.  We welcome contributions from educators and researchers relating to diverse forms of science education, from undergraduate and high school programming to public outreach.
