Unaccompanied minor refugees face unique risks, including exploitation, trafficking, and a lack of access to adequate protection, education, and healthcare, which can lead to long-term negative consequences such as chronic mental health issues, disrupted development, limited economic opportunities, and social marginalization. This workshop will focus on the ethical challenges surrounding child refugees. While children account for a significant proportion of the global refugee population and despite their recognition in legal frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, ethical discussions have largely neglected the specific needs of child refugees. This oversight includes questions about their heightened vulnerability, their developmental needs, their dependency on care and stability, and the moral significance of these factors for ethical frameworks addressing forced migration. By integrating insights from the philosophy of childhood and migration ethics, the workshop aims to advance a better understanding of the moral obligations owed to child refugees and to develop a child-sensitive ethics of refugeehood, and how the transition from childhood to adolescence and adulthood should be morally assessed under these circumstances. Furthermore, this workshop will build bridges between the philosophy of childhood and migration ethics.
