The Ann Johnson Institute’s Writing Retreat
July 6-12, 2026
Theme: Context of Discovery in Science and Technology
The Ann Johnson Institute for Science, Technology & Society (AJI) welcomes applications for our biennial one-week writing retreat at The Ampersand<https://woodenduckinn.com/> Inn in Newton, New Jersey, 5-11 July 2026. AJI Co-Directors Leah McClimans and Allison Marsh will be your hosts. The retreat offers five full days of writing in a country inn surrounded by acres of woodland in a state park, meals and transportation included.
The theme of the 2024 AJI Writing Retreat is the Context of Discovery in Science and Technology.
We welcome applications from any scholar with a PhD across the Science, Technology and Society disciplines with projects that explore the context of discovery in science and technology. We interpret the context of discovery broadly to encapsulate the moments, methods, and environments that give rise to new ideas, breakthroughs, and innovations. Submissions may address historical case studies, contemporary practices, theoretical perspectives or creative approaches that highlight how discoveries emerge, are shaped by context or transform society. The goal of this year’s retreat is project completion. We are seeking scholars with one or more projects that can reasonably be completed within a week of concentrated writing time. Such projects include but are not limited to the completion of an article, book chapter, grant proposal, exhibit script, policy white paper, or final revisions of a book manuscript. This is not a dissertation completion opportunity.
Past participants have said “this [is a] rare and extraordinary opportunity,” another reported that they planned to “continue conversations…and remain connected to this cohort of scholars.” We look forward to welcoming this year’s cohort and hope they build similar professional and relational communities because at the AJI #communityisthemethod
The AJI will select approximately ten participants for the 2024 retreat. Selection will be based on two criteria: 1) the project’s fit with the theme “Context of Discovery in Science and Technology” and 2) the likelihood of completing (or substantially completing) the project in the given period. Co-authors may apply to attend together by completing a single application and noting their intentions in their proposal.
If selected, the AJI will reimburse participants for economy air or ground transportation to the event venue, accommodation, and meals while in residence.
Important dates:
· Proposals accepted beginning: September 15, 2025
· Deadline for submission: November 17, 2025
· Notification of acceptance: January 16, 2026
