SOPHERE Webinar
February-May 2025
Cartesian Meditations by Edmund Husserl
This is a call for participants in our upcoming Webinar. Led by Peter Costello, author of Layers in Husserl’s Phenomenology through the University of Toronto Press, participants should be graduate students, recent PhDs, or established scholars in philosophy, literature, religious studies, the sciences, psychology, etc.
Beginning on February 19, 2025, the webinar will take place every other Wednesday at 12 noon EST on zoom. Each session will last no more than two hours (i.e., until 2PM EST). Participants should be willing to prepare graduate-seminar style presentations on particular sections of each of the five meditations in Husserl’s work. Each week, participants will begin by summarizing, asking questions, posing problems—in that order—for approximately 15 minutes. Then we will have a large group discussion of each section before moving on the next section.
Our intent is to go slowly enough to do deep textual work.
Interested participants should email Peter Costello at dr.peter...@gmail.com. Participants are asked to be members of SOPHERE (with a modest annual membership fee) prior to the beginning of the webinar.
Our first meeting will be on the First Meditation, sections 3-11. The Dorion Cairns translation will be used and can be found here:
