‘Colour Phenomenology in Odysseus Elitis’ The Axion Esti

Abstract

From Aristotle’s On Colors to contemporary environmental theories and philosophies, this presentation aims to introduce the field of “Colour Phenomenology,” working primarily with Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of “chiasm” and the “flesh of the world” respectively (Merleau-Ponty, 1983) in Odysseus Elytis’ The Axion Esti. Firstly, I will focus on the interconnectedness between Elytis’ colour poetics with his solar poetics -a mirror-play- upon which Elytis’ biocosmic perception is structured; then, the role of colour as a paradigm for emotion and eroticism in Elytis’ The Axion Esti will be addressed and lastly, will highlight on the colour mechanics as an ontological medium of Elytis’ lyricism. Through this presentation, Odysseus Elytis’ colour poetics offers a new phenomenological approach to the interpretation of the colours, humans and more-than-human world while reflecting on a thought that ‘goes’ beyond lyricism.
