Subject: [PHILOS-L] Symbolon Seminar #4 - Science and the Birth of Phenomenology by David Carr [June 27 2025:4PM CET]

Dear Philo-l subscribers,

We are honored to announce that David Carr, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy from Emory University will be delivering the fourth session of the Symbolon Seminar in person on Friday, June 27, at 4:00 PM (CET), entitled - Science and the Birth of Phenomenology. The seminar will be streamed online via YouTube, followed by an open discussion where all voices are warmly welcomed.

Seminar presentation

Symbolon, a broken token that reveals its full meaning only when reassembled, reflects the mission of this seminar: to bridge fragmented knowledge by uniting diverse perspectives. Using art as a subtle, connective medium, we aim to deepen our understanding of the AI era and its profound impact on human existence.

Speaker

David Carr earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at Yale University, completing his doctorate in 1966 under the guidance of Wilfrid Sellars and Richard J. Bernstein. He also studied at Heidelberg University with Karl Löwith, Dieter Henrich, and Hans-Georg Gadamer, and at the University of Paris under Paul Ricœur. Professor Carr’s research, publications, and teaching focus on Edmund Husserl’s philosophy and phenomenology, with a particular emphasis on the philosophy of history.

Title: Science and the Birth of Phenomenology

Abstract:

Emerging in the 20th century, phenomenology responded to advancements in science and mathematics from the late 19th century. While physics claims to define reality, its conception often diverges sharply from daily experience, creating a divide where what is experienced seems unreal, and what is real remains unexperienced. Phenomenologists neither reject science nor reduce experience to its terms. Instead, they “bracket” science, subjecting experience to rigorous description in its own right.

Painting : Sous-bois provençal, (1900-1902 - Paul Cézanne). More info here

Reflecting on Cézanne’s radical approach to painting, Merleau-Ponty writes:

“Cézanne’s painting suspends these habits of thought and reveals the base of inhuman nature upon which man has installed himself. This is why Cézanne’s people are strange, as if seen by a creature of another species”.(Sense and Non-Sense, Merleau-Ponty - 1948).

This quote encapsulates Cézanne’s ability to challenge conventional perceptions, offering a fresh encounter with reality that mirrors phenomenology’s effort to address the scientific alienation of everyday experience. Join Professor David Carr and the Symbolon team to deepen the discussion, delving into the profound interplay between art, human experience, and the transformative impact of the AI era.
