Hegel Society of Great Britain

Call for Abstracts

Annual Conference of the HEGEL SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN

Hegel and the Modern World

September 3 – 4, 2026, St Edmund Hall, Oxford

Submission deadline:
May 29, 2026

The Hegel Society of Great Britain invites submissions from current and recent PhD students for the annual conference of the Hegel Society of Great Britain. Two slots are available for junior researchers. Papers are welcome on the topic: “Hegel and the Modern World”. The idea behind the conference is to consider not only what Hegel actually said and thought about the modern world, but also what we might say about it — almost two hundred years after Hegel’s death — from a broadly Hegelian perspective. The term “modern world” thus covers a long period from the 18th century (at least) to the 21st, and encompasses social, political, aesthetic and religious life, as well as environmental concerns.

Confirmed speakers at the conference are: Caroline Bowman (Columbia), Jan Kandiyali (Durham), Thomas Khurana (Potsdam), Karen Koch (Basel) and Josh Wretzel (Penn State).

Applicants must either be currently registered for a PhD or have passed their viva / defense since January 1, 2021.

Presentation time will be 25 minutes + 20 minutes for discussion.

Abstracts (no more than 300 words) should be sent in MSWord as an attachment to:  Stephen....@warwick.ac.uk

Abstracts should be prepared for double-blind review by removing any identifying details. The body of the email should include the following information: name, paper title, institutional position, affiliation, email address, name of the principal supervisor.

Additionally, current PhD students should state when they began their PhD, and recent PhD students should provide the date of their viva / defense and the names of their examiners.

Notification of acceptance by June 19, 2026.
