In just two months, we have raised $21,000 through more than 750 donations for our Sustain H-Net Fundraising Campaign. Our call for support, made only by placing a banner on our website and email headers, motivated 450 first-time donors to sustain our work in addition to those who donated to our campaign more than once. If just 3,160 people donated $25, we would surpass our goal of raising $100,000 by December 31. As part of your end-of-year giving, will you join our generous supporters by donating to H-Net to keep our services running another year?

Dec 12, 2025 @ 10 am EST | MIT GHI hosts its 5th Forum! [Announcement]

Johann Noh
Location

MA
United States

Dear colleagues, students, and friends,

Join us for the 2025 MIT GHI 5th Forum! This session introduces the GHI Pillar Public Literacies: Civic Systems, Media & Emotional Intelligence, in particular two projects AI Tools for Democracy & Self Awareness and Changing the Game of Diplomatic Hegemonies: Games Against Oppression. This session aims to set the stage for ongoing and upcoming project activities tied to this pillar by offering insights regarding the unique possibilities afforded by procedural and systemic media to engage participants in intellectual discourse around complex and volatile issues through conflict simulations, negotiation games, and powerful artistic statements of peaceful resolution through cultural exchange.

5th GHI Forum

【Abstract】

Any grand scale attempt at shaping the future of public literacies has to take the role of procedural and generative systems seriously. Technological innovation and advances without ethical and sustainable grounding threatens a dystopian future that only the grounded wisdom of the arts, humanities, and social sciences can overcome. Gabor Hollbeck will introduce the AI Tools for Democracy & Self Awareness project which explores a new form of playful interactive learning game aiming to teach emotional intelligence by simulating interpersonal conflicts with AI. The project brings together game design, political cause areas and AI engagement together to strengthen societal cohesion. We will also hear from Lana Cook, co-director of the MIT Systems Awareness Lab before we finish with a panel discussion about the role of games in challenging diplomatic hegemonies. Just as the “Changing the Game” project centers community building for engagement and education, the objective of this panel is to share insights from studying and making this new kind of games, as well as to establish and strengthen ties between academics and practitioners interested in these issues.

Looking forward to seeing you at our events!

Deadline Approaching: Consortium Fellowships

Lawrence Kessler

The Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine invites applications for multiple fellowship opportunities in the history of science, technology or medicine, broadly construed. Fellows enjoy access to the archives and collections of Consortium member institutions as well as seminars and other programs dedicated to promoting scholarship.

Emanuel Fellowships for Independent Scholars
Emanuel Fellows will be awarded a stipend between $10,000 to $30,000 to be used for research in archives, oral history, or other research methods, travel for research, or time to write up research findings for an article, book, or other scholarly contributions in various formats or media. The stipend can also be used as income and salary support to provide time to conduct scholarship. Applicants must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent degree at least two years before the time of application, and may NOT be in a tenured or tenure track faculty position at a university or college nor enrolled as a student in any program of higher education. Scholars are eligible if they are independent or alternative academic scholars, meaning they have positions that do not have research expectations or offer institutional support for research in their area of expertise. They can be adjunct faculty, lecturers (if there is no research expectation), or unaffiliated with an educational institution. Applicants must be permanent residents or citizens of the United States. The Emanuel Fellowship may not be held concurrently with any position that would violate eligibility for applying as described above.

Research Fellowships
Research Fellowships are for scholars who would like to conduct research in the collections of two or more Consortium member institutions. Research Fellows will be awarded a stipend of $1,000 plus $750 for use of each collection, $425 if the collection is less than 100 miles from another collection for which a stipend has already been awarded. Fellows typically receive between $2,500 and $5,000 depending on number and locations of collections used. Scholars at any stage of their academic career are eligible to apply. There is no citizenship or residence requirement for this fellowship.

For more information and to apply, please visit our fellowships page.

Applications must be submitted online by December 15.
