Die Beschleunigung des technologischen Fortschritts und die damit verbundene Ideologie seiner Unumkehrbarkeit führen das philosophische und politische Denken an einen nur scheinbar paradoxen Punkt: die Rückkehr nicht nur mythischer, sondern vor allem eschatologisch-apokalyptischer Diskurse. In diesem neuen theologisch-politischen Feld, das von Katastrophennarrativen strukturiert wird, spielt die Ästhetik eine zentrale, bisher jedoch weitgehend unbeachtete Rolle.

Diese Sonderausgabe widmet sich der Analyse des Zusammenhangs zwischen Ästhetik, Politik und apokalyptischem Diskurs – sowohl aus philosophischer als auch aus medien- und kunsttheoretischer Perspektive. Welche Rolle spielen Bilder in der Konstruktion – oder auch Dekonstruktion – apokalyptischer Imaginäre? Was befeuert die Dominanz einer negativen Imagination, gefangen zwischen Klimakatastrophen, globalen Konflikten und neuen politischen Theologien? Ist es noch möglich, außerhalb dieses Diskurses zu imaginieren?

Wir laden Beiträge ein, die sich mit den ästhetischen und theoretischen Dimensionen apokalyptischer Imaginäre ebenso wie mit emanzipatorischen und widerständigen Perspektiven auf diesen Diskurs auseinandersetzen – aus philosophischer, medientheoretischer, ästhetischer oder politikwissenschaftlicher Sicht.

• Posthumane Imaginäre
• Memes und Apokalypse
• Verschwörungstheorien
• Politische Ästhetik 

Erwünschte Beitragsformat: Wissenschaftliche Aufsätze max 40.000 Zeichen 

Beitragssprachen: Deutsch oder Englisch.

Einreichung: Bitte senden Sie ein Abstract (max. 1.500 Zeichen) bis zum 15. August 2025. Im Falle einer Annahme müssen der wissenschaftliche Aufsatz sowie eine Kurzbiografie bis spätestens 15. November eingereicht werden. Die Benachrichtigung über Annahme oder Ablehnung erfolgt bis Ende August.

The acceleration of technological progress and the accompanying ideology of its irreversibility have led philosophical and political discourse to a point that is only seemingly paradoxical: the return not only of mythic narratives, but above all of eschatological and apocalyptic imaginaries. Within this emergent theological-political discourse – driven by catastrophe narratives and far-right ideological formations – aesthetics plays a central, yet still under-examined, role.

This special issue seeks to explore the relationship between aesthetics, politics, and apocalyptic discourse, from both philosophical and media- and art-theoretical perspectives. What role do images play in the construction – or deconstruction – of apocalyptic imaginaries? What sustains the dominance of a negative imagination shaped by climate disasters, global warfare, and new political theologies? Is it still possible to imagine outside this discursive framework?

We welcome contributions that address either the aesthetic and theoretical dimensions of apocalyptic imaginaries or explore emancipatory and resistant perspectives that seek to move beyond them – from philosophical, media-theoretical, aesthetic or political standpoints.

• Political aesthetics 

Type of submissions accepted: Academic essays max 40.000 characters 

Accepted languages: German, or English.

Submission process: Please send the abstract (max. 1.500 characters) by August 15. In case of acceptance, the final paper ready for publication and a short bio must be submitted by November 15. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be communicated by the end of August.
