Visiting Fellowship at the Institute for Ethics in AI, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, commencing in 2026/27

Particulars: The Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford proposes to elect three Visiting Fellows for the academic year 2026-27; one for each term. The Visiting Fellowship is intended to offer an established scholar in an AI-related field who graduated with their doctorate at least 5 years ago the opportunity to engage in a project related to the ethics of Artificial Intelligence. The length of tenure of the fellowship is one academic term. Applications are encouraged from candidates from all countries and all universities. Applications from underrepresented groups within their respective disciplines are particularly encouraged.
 
Visiting Fellows will be expected to participate in the academic life of the Institute and the University through, for example, lectures, seminars, and workshops. They are expected to be residents in Oxford throughout the nine weeks during which accommodation is paid, to attend Institute events, to present their research, and to engage intellectually with colleagues in the Institute and the wider university. The benefits attached to the Visiting Fellowship are:
 
•             Up to nine weeks of free accommodation in Oxford (including family accommodation where needed).
•             Economy airfare for the individual fellow.
•             £500 networking allowance.
•             Access to the Ethics in AI Institute, including desk space and use of the refreshment facilities.
•             University Card for access to the Philosophy and Theology Faculties' Library and the Bodleian Libraries.
•             An Oxford IT account giving access to all available electronic databases.
•             An Oxford University email address.
•             Opportunity to attend seminars and lectures and to meet colleagues and students.
•             Subscription to the Philosophy Faculty notices mailing list for information on events happening within the Faculty and elsewhere.
 
The Institute will proceed to elections in January 2026, and the successful applicants will take up their Fellowships on or after 1st October 2026 during one of the following terms: 

Michaelmas 2026 Starts Sunday 11 October Ends Saturday 5 December
Hilary 2027 Starts Sunday 17 January Ends Saturday 13 March
Trinity 2027 Starts Sunday 25 April Ends Saturday 19 June

The Home Office requires that all visiting academics demonstrate that they have appropriate permission to carry out the activities that they are involved in. This may entail obtaining a relevant Visa and ATAS certification.
