CALL FOR PAPERS

Deep Disagreement and the Limits of Argumentation – One-Day Symposium

Date: Wednesday, 21 October 2026
Venue: Institute of Philosophy, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovakia

Keynote speaker: Scott F. Aikin (Vanderbilt University), "Deep Disagreement and the Owl of Minerva Problem"

We invite submissions of abstracts for a one-day symposium exploring the nature and consequences of deep disagreement for argumentation theory. When interlocutors lack shared premises, standards of evidence, or even criteria for what counts as a good argument, what—if anything—can argumentation still accomplish?

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
– The nature and scope of deep disagreement
– Epistemic and argumentative responses to fundamental disagreement
– The limits of rational persuasion
– Deep disagreement in political, moral, and religious contexts
– The role of argumentation in polarized discourse
– Argumentation and epistemic agency under conditions of disagreement

Submission guidelines: Please submit an abstract of 300–500 words to deepdisagr...@gmail.com by 30 June 2026. Include your name, affiliation, and contact details in the body of the email.

Notification of acceptance: 1 August 2026.

There is no registration fee. Further details regarding the programme and practical arrangements will follow.

Organizer: Tomáš Kollárik (Institute of Philosophy, Slovak Academy of Sciences)
