From Bologna, Montpellier, and Paris to Padua, Ferrara, and, later, Leiden, people in Europe developed medical education within a complex landscape of by diverse material, philosophical, and cultural frameworks, transforming significantly between the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. This conference will examine the long-term development of medical learning, focusing on how knowledge was created, transmitted and adapted across formal and informal networks.
Central to this inquiry is the role of institutions, such as universities, guilds, and early learned societies, in structuring medical training. The receptions of shifting canons of authoritative texts โ€” from quaestiones quodlibetales and problemata to commentaries on Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna โ€” intersected with new textual formats such as consilia, dialogues and treatises, drawing on chemical and mechanical approaches to medicine. As medical knowledge evolved, so too did the methods of disseminating it, prompting experimentation with new styles and narrative techniques.
The topics covered at this conference go beyond the university to explore how medical education extended into the broader world of practice. How did the medical establishment interact with emerging theories and professional groups, such as apothecaries? The spread of medical knowledge outside the boundaries of organised academia will be examined in depth.
