The deadline for the call for contributions for the workshop "Philosophy of Agency in a More-Than-Human-World" has been extended to September 30.
Philosophy of Agency in a More-Than-Human-World
January 13 and 14, 2026
Faculty of Philosophy
University of Santiago de Compostela Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
Call for Contributions:
We are pleased to
announce
a 2-day workshop to be held
at the Faculty
of Philosophy at
the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). Keynote speakers
include,
among others, Maria
Alvarez (King's College London), Elizabeth Pachérie (Institut
Jean Nicod Paris) and Helen Steward (University
of Leeds). The workshop is focused on the
philosophy of agency from
a more-than-human perspective. What is commonly understood
as "human
agency" is
often the result
of the
interaction
of human
and nonhuman
agents. Studies
addressing different kinds
of nonhuman
agency (nonhuman
animals, plants, parts
of organisms, bacteria, robots
and
artificial
intelligent systems) have shaped
and ultimately changed not only our understanding
of human
agency and
action, but
also our concept
of agency itself. This workshop
is devoted to different kinds of nonhuman
agency, focusing on what is distinctive
of them, how they
are related to each other, whether there can be nonhuman moral
agents,
and how
agency should be reconceptualized
in a more-than-human world.
We welcome contributions (please see instructions for submissions below)
addressing topics which may
include, but
are not restricted to, the following ones:
*
living nonhuman agency (nonhuman
animals, plants, microorganisms,...);
*
material agency;
*
agency in robots
and
artificial
intelligent systems;
*
collective agencies: human
and nonhuman ways
of supraindividual
action
and their
interaction;
*
hybrid agencies:
interspecies
assamblages, modes
of collaboration between human
and nonhuman
agents;
*
conceptual boundaries of agency,
actors,
and
action.
Confirmed Speakers:
*
Maria Alvarez (King's College London)
*
Elizabeth Pachérie (Institut Jean Nicod, Paris)
*
Miguel Segundo Ortín (University de Murcia)
*
Pablo Seoane (University of Santiago de Compostela)
*
Helen Steward (University of Leeds)
Conference Dates:
January 13th and 14th, 2026
Location:
Faculty of Philosophy, Sala
de Xuntas (2nd Floor)
Plaza Mazarelos s/n
Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
