Dear list members,
The next Lucerne Master Class in PPE on the topic “Capitalism, Freedom and Inequality,” with Prof. Dr.
Lea Ypi (London School of Economics and Political Science) will take place in February 2027. The call for applications is now open.
"Capitalism, Freedom and Inequality"
February 15th – 18th, 2027
Closing Date Application: September 1st, 2026
Since 2013 the Lucerne Master Class offers doctoral students from Switzerland and from abroad an intensive exchange with internationally renowned researchers. Up to 16 doctoral students will be invited, of whom approximately 12 will be selected to present their
research projects to the group and receive feedback from Ypi and the other participants.
The Master Class with Lea Ypi starts from the diagnosis of an “age of unreason,” in which global capitalism not only deepens social and economic inequalities but also erodes the social and institutional conditions required for autonomous moral judgment. At
its core lies the distinction between freedom as choice and freedom as agency. The course focuses on a shared analysis of contemporary crises from both political and philosophical perspectives. Discussions will address the role of markets, the function of
law and the state, and the conditions for political progress in the context of contemporary globalization.
The call is aimed at doctoral researchers working on related topics. Participants will have the opportunity to present and discuss their own research and to explore, through shared reading and discussion, how inequality and agency are intertwined.
Best regards,
Rosa Zimmermann
