Some detailed suggestions following your question for strategies.
The yellow striped suggestions anyhow!

- Next to airport relocation, think of reconstructing/enlarging the harbor with the debris, if ecological feasible/safe. There is a lot of harbor building experience in Holland (f.e. city of Rotterdam or Port of Rotterdam http://www.portofrotterdam.com/nl/home/).
- With the debris of the earthquake (you have to move it anyhow to restart building) you can also provisionally pave new roads to and in temporary settlements.
- Think about economy/employment: rebuilding the town and villages with the financial help of the world will give temporarily relief, but what is needed for the long term to empower Haitian people? What are their strengths? A system of microcredit (women!) will be useful anyhow.
- Ask Wageningen University for advice (there is a department educating agricultural economists specialized in tropical conditions) on how to change agriculture methods (for better crops) and lifestyle > as deforestation comes likely from cutting trees and shrubs for cooking etc., … if you do not change lifestyle new forests won’t have a long life.

I have asked some experts-in-the-field if they would be willing to be
a “sound-board” to our ISOCARP group. I am humbled to say that they
agreed to provide answers and ideas to any questions, free of charge.
The "sound-board" contacts will make use of their organization/company
in-house knowledge and provide our ISOCARP group with output. This can
take the form of conceptual advice, idea sketches, examples or typical
technical solutions.
Please add your queries/thoughts to the list below,
(Together with Ric I hope to pass them on to the contacts in the next
days, in a concise manner)
>>>Sound-board Airport Strategies
Contact: Ben Hasselman from NACO (Netherlands Airport Consultants)
Queries/thoughts:
- Ideas on airport upgrading for the short term
- Strategies for airport relocation and the link to city/port
- Capacity growth scenarios for passenger and cargo
- please add/comment...
>>>Sound-board Earthquake-Rebuilding
Contact: Patrick Murphy from Broadway Malyan (Architect)
Queries/thoughts:
- Slum regeneration
- Earthquake-building design guidelines
- Examples on temporary settlements
- Dealing with community facilities / hospitals
- please add/comment..
I hope we can bring together our thoughts on the topics below and to
keep thinking in an integral manner by accessing current knowledge and
expertise.
Lets all attempt to set/fix the list of strategies and deepen-out the
important topics relevant to the situation.
Kind regards,
Robert Tensen
