Call to University Planning Faculty -- Potential exists to develop a
series of coordinated planning studio classes addressing issues of
priority, under coordination by ISOCARP. Planning / Design Studio
classes could address water supply systems; emergency shelter
prototype; permanent settlement design; etc. A globally coordinated
curriculum could be devised this winter and studies commence as early
as spring -- adapting existing curriculum courses or as new
independent study group project challenges. Planning students at our
universities are eager to participate where opportunities unfold. Our
university may possibly identify 3-4 study groups, recruiting over 50
students to address tasks. Ideas?

Thanks, Nikos-
ISOCARP UPATs typically include 6-8 "Young Planning Professionals",
but probably not for this particular program.
It would be ideal to have some liaison with Universities in Haiti.
Could you find out?
I have contacts in the Dominican Republic and will inquire there, too.
Sincerely,
Ric
P.S. I teach "Planning for Developing Countries" at Portland State
University

Hello --

Ric and Nikos: I agree wholeheartedly with the idea of bringing in students or designing some projects for students. I suggest we look at the long term goals and the management aspects. I agree with Ric, as this may not be the situation for bringing students into the "field". I would like to focus classes on specific seminars, like Nikos suggested, and small-scale planning analysis for studios --- like a small planning area, like a village, or neigborhood. We can incorporate a lot of collaborative technology, and even tools like google sketchup to make this a joint program between our universities (???) just some early thoughts. I woud like to be able to help with this idea and develop some courses/seminars when the time is right.

Thanks for letting me help!

Amy

My name is Dries Willems from Antwerp Belgium. My son was working in Port au Prince from November 2008 until yesterday  with an NGO with local organizations. He  came  save back in Belgium on Sunday evening with the Belgian air force, but he will return to Haiti as soon as possible. I am an “retired” urban planner ( 01 October 2009) but have not the feeling from a retired person..

I have a  experience in Tunisia  ( 1970-1977) and experience for strategic city development in different city’s  in Belgium.(see cv). I  and my son will cooperate with the  Isocarp Upat initiative, and  if you need us  please let us know.  The most important thing to do on a long term is to make Haiti people  independent from the extern finances and the  extern  expertise! So  please let us think togehther and prepare together a program and find he finances as soon as possible for a sustainable solution and support for the local people and organizations of Haiti ! My son and me are speaking French, Dutch and English.

Greetings,
The planning faculty at Western Washington University would like to
commence early planning for a coordinated curriculum project beginning
this spring quarter. 3 courses have already been identified to focus
on the problem of emergency housing, building on previous work for
emergency housing in earthquake recovery conditions. The WWU courses
include sustainable design studio, emergency / disaster planning
studio, and an international environmental policy course.

The courses will address design/implementation self help sustainable
housing solutions for a recovery period likely exceed 15 years.

If you are interested in linking your relevant planning course with
the coordinated curriculum project, please post your interest,
disciplinary focus, and course schedule to this site. The project also
needs assistance from planners on site in Haiti to assist in a
community liaison capacity.

Thank you -- nikos
