Though he was unsuccessful in his bid, everyone please join me in congratulating John Masson for his efforts to bring reform to IREA in district 5. The ballot results unfortunately favored the appointed incumbent, the one whose campaign material read "Re-elect...," though he had never faced an election in the six years he has been on the board of directors. The final, unofficial tally is as follows:
Total ballots 6042
For Shea 3838
For Masson 2178
Disqualified 26
Though the candidate endorsed by IREA Voices did not win, the total ballots cast reflects the largest recorded vote for a district election in recent memory. In fact, there was finally an election in district 5 after a minimum of at least 24 years without elected representation, all thanks to John Masson challenging the do-nothing incumbent.
Thank you John! Your efforts, like all member-owners who participate in our co-op, help to steer IREA back toward a course that gives access to all of us instead of only a select few.
