Hi All,

This year ( first full season with Soave), I'm doing more of my own servicing.  Starting with the easy stuff.

For the oil change, there is no clearance under the engine, so I decided to pump out the old oil via the dip stick access port.  ( a slow and tedious process).

While waiting for suction to draw out the oil, I started questioning if there is a better way.  Looking at the parts schematic ( HERE )  there is an oil drain hose kit available.  Now that I knew exactly where to look, I used my camera to take some blind shots under my engine and determined the drain kit is present on Soave.

( HERE ) is a link to the photo.  Feeling a bit dumb for not noticing this earlier, and because I didn't have the right fitting on hand to apply suction to the drain hose I completed the oil change via the dip stick port.

My questions are as follows :
  1. Is there some kind of pit-cock to open on the drain port ?  The parts diagram seems to indicate -no- oil can be drained by simply applying suction to the end of the tube.  The tube on Soave is lead from the sump and hung in an obscure place in my engine compartment.
  2.  I don't see  ( or feel when I reach under) a clamp on the hose where it connects to the fitting.  The diagram doesn't show a clamp either.  Is the hose somehow fused to the fitting.
  3. Is there any maintenance or inspection that I ought to be doing on the "oil drain hose kit".  Failure of this part would be tough to overcome without the right tools, parts, and spare oil.
  4. I removed the plug on the hose and lowered it to below the engine.  No oil drained.... I can image there is a lot of gunk in the sump that might make a gravity flow difficult.  Any tricks to freeing up a clogged oil drain hose ?  Thinking suction might be needed to get a flow started.
Thanks for any insights.  My plan/hope is to use this approach on my next oil change.

Glad I did the change myself.  We only put about 50 hours on the engine this season. Compared to the oil I see coming from my diesel tractor after 150 hours, the oil I got from Soave's engine was MUCH dirtier.  Makes me wonder how complete the oil changes at the marina were.

Rob,

Not answering your question directly but I used the sump hose on my previous 26 (Westerbeke 21) and pumped out what I could manually but it never matched the oil capacity listed in the spec. I bought from Amazon an electric pump for about $50Canadian and went in to my (new to me) 30 (Universal 35) through the dipstick. Worked great.  Simple and clean and extracted the quantity I was expecting.

Our oil drain hose comes from the bottom of the pan to a location at the side of the engine relatively convenient for access.   It is attached by a bracket to a position just above the oil level in the pan (lowering the hose will allow oil to drain).   It has a threaded brass cap but no valve.   When changing the oil I remove the cap and install a thread to hose barb fitting then connect my pump.   Seems to work fine.  Gets all but a couple hundred millilitres much of which is in the filter.  Our engine is a Westerbeke W52 but the drain kit sounds similar.    I worry about that hose since if it fails all the oil comes out into the bilge.   Difficult to inspect and impossible to replace without removing the engine

Rob:  The fitting on the bottom of the pan is called a “Banjo Bolt” and is there to drain the sump using a pump.  I too, have a 12V pump attached.  There is no valve as it’s not necessary if you keep the end of the hose up above the sump, but keep it tight or oil fumes will escape and make a mess.

On my Westerbeke 13 there was a hose from a banjo bolt on the bottom of the oil pan. I would remove the cap plug and fit a hose from a vacuum extraction pump. I would tape the hoses together. If the engine oil was hot and I removed the engine oil filler cap the oil would suck out relatively quickly. My Beta has a sump hose on the oil pan but it runs to a small hand pump. About 10-15 strokes on the pump extracts most of the oil.

Thank everyone.  As usual,  asking the question in this forum improved my understand and confidence to improve my ability to be a good steward for Soave.

Before my next oil change I'll get the right fitting to connect my manual vacuum pump to Soave's oil drain hose.

I think there are some slow leaks in the pump because it seems to loose vacuum faster than oil flows into the tank.  Maybe an electric pump is in my future?

Thanks,

Using the manual pump is a slow process.  Pull the handle up and wait a second or two for the vacuum to suck up the oil.  If the engine is not hot, it will take a whole lot more work!!

Manual oil pump that I installed on my former N30.  Great improvement with no spill or drip issues and no additional gear to have aboard.  Simple system easy to use.

Similar manual oil pump out system done by PO on my current N33.  Works just as well, just not as pretty as the one I installed on my N30.

Joe: Yea... two lessons learned.  1) When coolant temp reaches 120º F oil temp is still pretty cool.... need to run engine longer to heat oil.    2) Make sure seals on the manual pump are in good shape... any air that leaks in needs to be removed to maintain vacuum.

I do like the handy dandy closed collection container on the manual pump.  I'll probably keep using it.

I inherited the pump from my Father In-law.... it predates the availability of inexpensive electric pumps.... guessing circa 70's or 80's.  I have a soft spot for old tools.  My wife's great grandfather was a machinist in the  20's... his toolbox still has his union cards to prove he paid his dues as he moved from job to job.  Man if those tools could talk... folks back then had serious mechanical ingenuity.  I had to talk to a retired machinist to identify some of the tools from the 20's.

I have a retired machinist living nearby from Germany that is probably around or in his 90s.  He managed to make a new sleeve for my electric halyard winch.

Ed: Thanks for the photos.

The hose and fitting on my boat looks exactly like the one leading to the handpump in your photo.  I think one of Soave's POs removed the pump and added a square head plug.
