Propane heater

I've been searching for a manual for the propane cabin heater in my 84/30C, I have found that the company went belly up years ago, and checked the document center. Does anyone have one or know where I might find one?

My model 6 P 12 from Thermal unit Inc.

The reset button does not operate.

Any thoughts ?

   I have the 6P12a model and I do have the manual.  The manual comes with a sheet explaining the difference in the "a" models and they seem minor.
   I am at the boat and I have taken photos of the manual pages. But I think it would take me the rest of the day to post it from my phone.  (West coast, so there's a lot of "day" left.)  If nobody else posts anything before I get home, I'll do it this evening or tomorrow morning.
  
   Meanwhile, is this the first time you have used it (new owner)?  I couldn't get mine to work when I first got the boat and neither could the surveyor.  Then one day I was pulling my manuals binder off the shelf and noticed a thermostat tucked away almost impossible to find.  I set it up properly and had no trouble lighting the heater.

   On the other hand, the reset/off/on toggle switch is probably an off-the-shelf part.  It has three single-pole positions: ON, OFF, and a momentary reset.  If you ohm it out and are sure it's bad, it shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement.  It will probably have manufacturer and numbers on the body of the switch.  If they are defunct you might be able to cross reference it somewhere. 

   The manual lists a built-in circuit breaker which it claims is next to the ON/OFF/Reset switch, but it isn't there in my unit.  You might check for one on yours. You may need to lay down and look up from below to see it if you can't find it by feel.

I just signed up with an N30U with no heat down on the Ct River and now the fun begins, sans heat.

I replaced it with a lovely pull out waste basket. I never really used the heat much, as I am haven’t stayed on the boat past September.

When everything is closed up we are pretty cozy. 

Years ago I was on Bearcat  on a cold rainy day when Jack & Jenny put terra cotta flower pots on the stove burners for a little while. That helped to warm things up.

I am a retired heating and air conditioning contractor.  I went to the NFPA.org website and typed in marine propane heater standard. 15 results piped up. None of the results were associated with the vessel itself. The closest result to marine or boats was:

NFPA 1005, STANDARD FOR PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR MARINE FIRE FIGHTING FOR LAND-BASED FIRE FIGHTERS (2019)

There was also a standard for Marinas and Boatyards.  I saw nothing for boats or vessels. 

I think you need an ABYC standard. 

What are you attempting to accomplish?  Maybe what you need is a new heater with a new propane supply hose continuous from the propane locker to the heater ( no joints except to the heater connection outside of the propane locker.

thank you for your reply and you're certainly right. It might be easier to change the heating unit and upgrade the supply system. I'll keep looking.
I imagine that the NFPA caadian standar is similar to the ABYC... I'll keep looking to find someone who can do the upgrade.

Ernie A. here. I thought that I'd replied to your question a few hours but ....... I must have forgotten to "post message". Old age ..... So, I'll write it again !!

Ward is totally correct on all counts. In my opinion, the only "best thing to do" is to completely change/upgrade the propane system and, I belive, the heater, itself. Only by doing that will you arrive at safe and correct installation. Personally, I have NO experience with boat propane systems, heaters, stoves, etc. but the Nonsucher community HAS. Many of us have completely been through this process and there is a lot of information here, on the bulletin board and, likely, elsewhere. Hopefully, someone will weigh in on all of this and can direct to where the info is.

So that you know, I believe that the NFPA represents professional fire prevention companies and fire fighters, etc. It has, essentially, very little or nothing to do with recreational boating. The organization that "takes care of" the needs of recreational boaters (sail and power) is, indeed, the ABYC. It is the American Boat and Yacht Council and its standards are accepted and followed worldwide. The only organization that deals with recreational (and commercial) boating in Canada is Transport Canada but they adhere to ABYC standards and work very closely with ABYC. ABYC is the trusted and correct source of information for all of us.

That does not mean that we need to join the ABYC. I think membership is used mainly by boating professionals - builders, designers, etc.
