My 30 classic has a custom holding tank of about 40 US Gal. A couple
of years ago it developed a leak and I had it patched by Klacko Spars in
Oakville. It has held OK, but I am thinking a new aluminum tank would
be a good idea.

With 50 gal it is great for extended cruising without need for
pump-outs.

I would appreciate comments about reducing the size of the tank to gain
more storage room versus the ability to avoid pump-outs while cruising.
I am planning on taking the boat from Lake Ontario to the Bahamas in the
next year (or so).

Aluminum IS NOT a good material to use for a holding tank.

The original was epoxy lined and lasted 25 years. I checked on a plastic tank and they don't have my size.

My tank has a trapazoid cross section to fit the space under the starboard quarter berth.

Would the standard 25 US gal Nonsuch 30 plastic tank fit in the space?

The holding tanks that the INA has contracted for are plastic instead
of aluminum because of the corrosive nature of the tank contents.
Almost all aluminum holding tanks will leak eventually.

While the INA holding tank for the 30C is only 25 gal., one of the
larger water tanks for the other models might fit in your custom
location. The only difference between holding and water tanks is the
plumbing, and that is done after the tank is built. The number and
location of ports is very flexible and can be done just the way you
need it.

I suggest you talk to Bob Cole about your installation and see if
INA's manufacturer can provide a tank that fits. Bob's info and tank
specifications are on the INA site.

In the Bahamas you will also need a macerator.

NS Ultra #441 Chesire Cat is in the Bahamas now, and got by quite well
for two years on the US east coast with a 20 gal holding tank.

Previous owners were serious curisers. They disconnected the water
intake to the head and we simply add a cup of tap water (or more if
necessary). Fresh water is said to be better than salt water for
equipment and odors, and the manual addition of water greatly reduces
volume going into the holding tank.

My previous experience 15 years ago with a Nonsuch 36 confirmed that
metal tanks and salt water are not a good combination.

No problems so far with plastic tank and fresh water.

Install a macerator, You will not find many places on your way south to get pumped out.  In the Bahamas, just empty yout tank into the ocean.
There are no pumpout stations, none that I know of.

I have been led to believe that in many of the popular anchorages in
the Bahamas, like Georgetown, are moving towards being no-discharge
areas to protect the coral. This will require a floating 'honey wagon'
and of course a fee for pumpouts. I guess it will be a flat fee for a
pump-out and a larger tank would mean fewer visits from the sewage
barge.

MERCATOR has room for a macerator and there is a sealed through-hull
for discharge.

I got a quote today from Klacko Spars (who built the original tank) and
the price in stainless steel is about $1,200 Canadian.

Where is the normal holding tank for a 30 classic located?

We cruised for 5 months in the Bahamas in 2003 and there were essentially no pump outs.  also not many going south from Long Island Sound.
