I recently refinished my cabin top so I am careful about staining or otherwise damaging it.  What do you use to mark your halyard with reefing points?

I just use indelible magic marker - black for all the way up and red and green for the tack reef points.  Refresh the colors when they fade.  Never saw any evidence of staining the cabin top.

same as Ed but you can stitch in a kinda whipping with colored thread. Main thing is getting a reference mark which makes reefing simpler and lessons the chance of doing damage. do it at the dock and check that all leads are correct and clews are not pulling on sail slides at the bottom stop. I also use a black indelible marker, a Sharpie. Stadler makes a good one too. I simply put a broad single black mark around the rope just before the halyard enters the jammer for full hoist, a  double mark for 1st reef, and a triple mark for 2nd reef.
