Hello Nonsuch Google Groups Users,

The INA has been supporting online discussion groups since the early 2000s,
beginning with the original Listserv on AOL. We transitioned to Google
Discussion Groups in May 2009 — that’s over 16 years of shared knowledge!
During this time, the email- and browser-based system has been an
invaluable resource for Nonsuch owners and enthusiasts, helping us exchange
ideas, solve challenges, and share techniques. The generosity of those who
have contributed over the years has been a cornerstone of our strong
community.

However, it’s now time to move on. Google has not kept pace with modern
needs — its spam filters increasingly block valid posts while letting junk
through, and some members are experiencing inconsistent message delivery.

We’re excited to announce that the Google Groups platform is being replaced
by the Nonsuch Community Forum, hosted on Discourse.org. This new platform
works seamlessly across email, web browsers, and a dedicated mobile app.
Launched in early 2025, The Nonsuch Community Forum
<https://nonsuch.discourse.group/>offers powerful new features including
better organization, support for rich media (photos, diagrams, videos), and
improved administrative tools.

After January 1, 2026, Google Groups will no longer be active for posting,
and the INA will discontinue support. To preserve our shared history, all
Google Discussion Group threads will be imported into the new Nonsuch
Community Forum, and will also remain viewable (but frozen) on Google.

As of today, more than 200 members are already active on the new Forum —
and it’s running smoothly! If you haven’t joined yet, visit this link
<https://nonsuch.discourse.group/invites/yMnFhrNMyb>and follow the simple
signup instructions at the top of the page.
Once you create your account, you can customize how you receive
notifications and participate by email or directly through the website. We
also encourage you to download the Discourse app — it provides an
excellent, easy-to-use interface for mobile access.

A heartfelt *thank-you *to all the volunteers helping with this transition
— especially Jon Lewit for spearheading the effort!

Fair winds,

Just underlining what Bob said: " *If you haven’t joined yet, visit this
link <https://nonsuch.discourse.group/invites/yMnFhrNMyb>and follow the
simple signup instructions at the top of the page.*"

Signing-up has been found fairly easy by the 200 people already on the Nonsuch
Community Forum <https://nonsuch.discourse.group/>. So come on in -- the
water's fine.

Nevertheless, those of us working on this transition are preparing some
additional materials for those who need help signing up. If you want to
make the change before those are posted and have trouble doing it
unassisted, *feel free drop me a private message*. I'll be happy to get
in touch with you and help; learning what problems you have will make the
help docs better.

Repeating a second thing Bob said, just in case anyone missed it: *"To
preserve our shared history, all Google Discussion Group threads will be
imported into the new Nonsuch Community Forum, and will also remain
viewable (but frozen) on Google." *Nothing's going to be lost in this
transition.

so I just signed up for Discourse. I definitely do not want to be notified
every time someone posts or likes or what not. I do not see anyway to get
a once a day email of what has been posted, as I have been getting on
Google for ages. Is it possible?

Hi Lloyd,

I just checked your* Profile / Preferences *page and saw that you are set
up to get a daily summary. Way to go. You will get a single email every
day of new topics that have been posted.

*Everyone* -

When you get an account on Discourse, you do not automatically go into what
is called *Mailing list *mode (where you get an email for every posting,
like in Google). Should you want to, you can change your email
preferences. That's described here:

Don't be shy about making suggestions, or messaging me on Discourse (click

*Please clarify*:
*1)* we have already paid $600 for an annual subscription (to test?
Discourse...)? How was this funded?
*2)* The $600 paid reduces the transfer rate to $2400 ($3000 less the
$600)... Then it is $600/year (currently) after this? How will this be
funded?
I agree that if we are to do this, that we would be better served by having
Discourse do the transition, rather than a consultant, as they will
comprehend, and be responsible for the complexities of their system better
than anyone who does not have internal access on a daily basis.

It seems the general concensus is to move to Discourse. I have been using
Discourse occassionally to become more familiar with it... it seems good,
but takes a bit of use to get comfortable - (probably because I have been
using the current Google Discussion Group since it was implemented - there
was some resistance to move to the Google Discusssion Group from the prior
format, but that worked out well), but if it prevents the 'spamming', is
safer for members, provides better searches, and is easier to post
(including pictures and video(?)), and we are prepared to pay for a similar
service that is currently free... and the funding of said new service can
be covered by the current membership dues without an increase (or very
minor increase)...
- then I would vote to migrate the Google Group to Discourse

Subject: Final steps for implementing Discourse - Vote Needed

Hi All -

Jon Lewit and I have been finalizing the last step towards the Google migration to Discourse.

In order to have all of the old Google Groups conversations copied into Discourse it requires an upgrade in the plan for one year (one $3,000 upfront payment) to have the programmers at Discourse perform that migration. This means that all of the old threads and content would be saved and searchable, just as it is now.

We looked in to a consultant, who would charge about the same, between $1500-$3000. Having Discourse perform the data migration is $2,400 ($3,000-$600 after accounting for the $600/yr subscription we are paying now).

The benefit of having Discourse perform this is that it’s all internal at Discourse. An outside consultant would have to export our current Discourse site, import the old data, then re-upload the Discourse site. I like the idea of one group being responsible for the whole project, and it will be faster having Discourse perform this. The site would need to be “read only” for a day while this is performed.

For the record, what I’m asking is to authorize a one year upgrade of our Discourse account to a Business Plan, which will be an upfront cost of $3,000.

Thanks -

Peter,
The $600 is actually the annual amount of a Discourse monthly subscription
of $50 per month. INA has paid this monthly over the past 6 months while
setting up and testing the Discourse system. At the $600 annual fee, that
works out to be approximately $1.00 per member per year. A very reasonable
amount, I think you'll agree.

The extra $2400 is a one time charge to transfer the historical data from
Google to Discourse. Once done, next year we'll revert back to the $50/mth
subscription.

Hi Rob

The bottom looks good on Soave after a seasons use. I hope my bottom paint held up as well. I just finished decommissioning yesterday and will be hauled soon. I noticed your boom still up. Do you plan on lowering it to the deck before covering it this winter?

Hi Brian,
We bought Soave in the fall of '23 and she wintered in Westbrook with both
her mast and wishbone up. ( HERE
<https://photos.app.goo.gl/rTBjCyHU2SxxiyRY6> ) is a photo.

During our second winter she wintered at Norwalk Cove with mast down and
wishbone rigged similar to the way yours is rigged in the photo. With the
wishbone down the shrink wrap could protect the wishbone.

Last winter with the mast and wishbone down, I discovered minor corrosion,
and after talking to a few owners that experienced mast failures, I decided
to double down and remediate as much corrosion as possible and do better
inspections of both mast and wishbone going forward.

The photo from this year was immediately after hauling, the rigging crew
hadn't gotten to do their bit yet. I'm going to winter again at Norwalk
Cove with the mast down. This winter I'm replacing the mast fairlead
collar and replacing the stainless bands at the base of the sail track. I
may also add a second halyard. On a "mature" boat maintenance is never
done.

I'm also using a canvas cover this winter instead of shrinkwrap.
