I need to replace the mast joint bolts on my Nonsuch 30, and want to ask this group where I can get these bolts or something similar.  I've tried several local stores (Oppshore Spars, Suburan Bolt, Mike's Marine, West Marine).  Mike Quill Yacht Rigging has the part, but I can't reach him by phone or email.  Is his store still open?

The first picture is the original part, and the second picture is what Mike Quill is selling.

When we repaired ours the kit Mike sold us included a sleeve that was inserted to be sure that the mast was not crushed by tightening the bolt.  Here is a photo from his website:

Jim,

Mike Quill announced his plans to retire in two years one year ago, and I'm told he's back from snowbirding in Arizona.  But apparently he has not been as active as in the past.

The section of his website that shows the process, from which Tim grabbed that picture, is at https://www.mqyr.com/joint_repair.html

He recommends 5/8th inch bolts, and a sleeve with a corresponding inner diameter and a 3/4 inch outer diameter.  The boltholes need to be drilled out to 3/4th inch and the sleeve pushed through them.

The bolts are stainless, as I believe is the sleeve.  The length of the bolt the exterior diameter of the mast plus room for washers and bolts to engage the threads.  Similarly, the length of the sleeve is supposed to be just a tiny bit less than the mast outer diameter.   Rather than giving out lengths, he recommends measuring your own mast with a calipers.

Both MarineBoltSupply.com and BoltDepot.com sell 316 stainless 5/8th inch bolts up to six inches long.    They don't advertise longer than that, but might be able to supply or know where to go if you contacted them.   McMaster-Carr (McMaster.com) sells much longer bolts, but is probably pricier.

I don't know a source for sleeves off the top of my head, but these three sources might be able to point you in the right direction.

Onlinemetals.com has this stainless tubing which I believe will work as the sleeve.   $19.94 per foot.

Good point, Ward.

I'm embarrassed that I didn't think of looking there, given that I just received a shipment from them today.

Jim, I can supplement Ward in vouching for OnlineMetals.com as a reasonable vendor, in addition to McMaster.com, MarineBoltSupply.com and BoltDepot.com

I think all you need now is a pair of calipers (and the mast out on a set of stands).

Jim? Curious what made you decide to swap out old for new bolts?

I was in a hurry to get back sailing, so I fabricated a part using a stainless steel rod.  The plastic fitting will protect the mast walls from the sharp bolt threads at least for while and will get me through the rest of the season.  Over the winter I'll get an aluminum rod and add the threads.

I needed to replace the one bolt because it mysteriously came out somewhere in my travels.  The original bolt is on top.

Mike Quill did respond to my phone call and offered to ship me replacement mast joint bolts via overnight mail.  Sounds like he'll close up shop either this fall or Spring 2023.

Gary,
The original bolts and mushroom style nuts were fabricated from aluminium and over time the nut will split.  Replacing them is a good idea.

Many thanks for the follow-ups. Think I’ll order and check/install next time mast is out. Regards, Gary Aloki/ NS30329 , Oyster Bay NY
