Hi All -

After a lot of research in this group and staring at the installation manuals for weeks and weeks, I finally finished the installation of my Raymarine EV-200 Sail (Thanks Santa!). My test drive occurred on Saturday in Baltimore (a beautiful 70 degree day in WINTER) and the results were AMAZING! For many of us who have the old Autohelm wheel pilot, this undermount system is fantastic. Mine was the ST4000+, a real workhorse.

The steering is so much better in all conditions. On my sea trial day winds were blowing 10-15 and gusting to 25. Both upwind and downwind, the boat on autopilot handled like a champ. Downwind particularly was my issue with the old system. The old one did not anticipate the yaw very well but the new system is amazing.

Aside from all that, the silence of the new system is just a dream. No more chattering of the pulleys etc. The touch of a button takes over the steering without a sound. I love that.

Attached is my photo essay of my build.

Best to All -

Amazing detail and super timely for me, thanks Bob! I have the EV1 wheel pilot and the excessive rattling noise of the wheel pilot under many RPMs is driving me crazy. I'll eventually look into a rudder drive unit and your instructions will be super helpful

Nice work Bob, way beyond my skill set. Also nice photographic history essay of the install. I did not want to call it instructions in light of the disclaimer.

A question for you. In the 3rd photo (page/slide) the starboard side steering cable is shown. In the photo it looks like the cable is worn halfway through.  Is that an accurate read of the photo? Have you replaced the cable?

Thanks Mark - I’m pretty sure that’s just some grease buildup on the quadrant. I checked the cable while I was down there and it’s in good shape. No splintering visible.

Bob,

Very impressive! Thank you for documenting your work and sharing with us. I’m sure your installation will be a “must see” at the CBNA Spring rendezvous in Baltimore in May.

I know I’m very interested. Would love this upgrade for FATE.

Hi Bob,
Great job and excellent detail!

I saw the same issue as Mark Powers above, that the steering cable looks worn through and about to give-way at any moment... hopefully you've already replaced, but if not, that should be on your critical list of things to do before venturing out again!

Gosh - you guys are scaring me! I'm assuming you're talking about this area? That's just some grease that has settled in that one area on the quadrant. Am I missing something?

Hi Bob,

Yes, that is the area that caused concern for me.  The cable looks considerably thinner at the center of the area you circled.  It could be an optical illusion, but the rest of the cable appears to be about double the width of this section, so to be on the safe side, it may need to be inspected again...

Excellent job!  Plus congratulations for working in a part of the boat that is hard to get to!  Without adding more to the greasing of the quadrant thread - but I have been careful not to apply grease to the chain.  The Edson manual was specific to using #30 oil to the chain, to penetrate the wires fully for better lubrication, grease apparently doesn’t do this.

In the 26C manual page 71 on line, Edson recommends light machine oil for both the chain and the cables. 2 pages later it specifies #30 oil.  I guess they consider #30 oil to be light machine oil.

Hi Bob,

I'm in the process of laying out the installation of a new Raymarine EV200 system so thank you so much for the detailed and timely documentation of your project. One question about your radial drive wheel and the keyway on the rudder shaft. It looks to me like we have the same Edson radial drive wheel but on Challenge it is installed upside down from what your pictures show. The result is that there is no exposed keyway above the radial drive wheel to make the mechanical reference for the tiller arm. Flipping the radial drive wheel is a simple process which according to my rough measurements will give me about 2" of exposed keyway above the wheel and the steering cables will still line up properly. The issue is that there is protrusion on the new bottom side of the radial drive wheel that will not clear the rudder stop "bulkhead" running from the aft edge of the rudder shaft housing. In your pictures it looks like your bulkhead is notched to allow this protrusion to clear. Did you reverse your radial drive wheel and cut that notch or was your boat assembled that way?

Thanks,
Greg Doyal

Hi Greg -

My quadrant was oriented as shown in my pics. I did not change that or modify the stops. Seems odd to me that they would have installed it in different arrangements but I guess if it works in either position it doesn’t matter!

Good luck with the install -

Bob
