I bought the extension two years ago and noticed the same problem. A "lot of file" work on the mating hinge parts brought the extension in line with the lower part of the ladder, and it now works very well. The second position you show won't
work, as the extension swings away as one tries to put a foot on it. Mike B solved this problem with a low cost plastic extension as shown in his blog.
The original ladder pictures did not exhibit this problem, so the hinge part must have changed in later production.

I had already done a lot of file work on the hinges, but I never managed to get them to allow the extension to rest against the ladder as Ron Schryver's photos seem to show. But finally convinced that the extension must be attached as Ron's photos show, I thought of something that might work. See my solution below. The bimini frame clips, which are meant to prevent window material from rubbing against the frame are perfect for closing the gap between the ladder pieces. Although I haven't tried it yet, I'm more confident that the hinge point will support the leverage from a person standing on the extension step.

Hi anyone in a “quandary” about the boarding ladder extension.
I drew the original design and had it made up by a local machine shop. It was a very simple design and functioned well in both the down and up positions (without modification) as shown in the 2 photos of the ladder on my former N30U in the post by Ron Schryver. We used it regularly over the last 3 summers I owned the boat.
It seems to me from other photos posted that the fittings on the extensions made later were not always of the same design. Note in Ron’s photos that the plan allowed for considerable overlap of the extension on the original ladder which made it strong enough to support an adult’s weight with no problem. Also, the extension was made long enough so that the distance between the steps of the original ladder was about the same as the distance from the bottom step of the original ladder to the step on the extension.
Hope this helps a little.
Happy sailing everyone!
(By the way, the 2 photos were actually taken by Thor during a Nonsuch cruise just west of Kingston.)

Hi Bill, I've included a couple of pictures that show the ideal installation for the ladder extension.
Hope this helps.....Ron

I bought one of the extensions for the boarding ladder a couple of years ago, but have not yet employed it. I have a concern about how it is to be attached to the standard boarding ladder, and wonder how others who bought one have installed it.
Refer to the two photos I posted. Basically, I am worried that the mechanical advantage in photo 1 is too great and the leverage when a person of average weight (say 200 pounds) is standing on the extension step is likely to exert perhaps 2000 lbs or more of force on the hinge between the ladder and the extension.
On the other hand, if I mount the extension as in photo 2, the extension will swing free and exert no extra force on the hinge, but will be more difficult to use as it will always swing away as you try to step on it. Plus, the step will not be level as the mounting holes are angled for attachment in photo 1
Finally, if I move the hinge point further up towards the last step on the ladder and attach it as in photo 1, it reduces the leverage on the hinge, but also reduces the advantge of the extension. What's the best solution? And thanks for your input.

PS: Those are my winter steps in the photos, which are replaced with teak when the boat is launched (which was today).
