Mindfulness is our innate capacity to pay attention in the present moment. Started in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the systematic application of mindfulness training to stress and to health problems related to stress. MBSR is clinically proven in the treatment of anxiety, depression, anger and communication problems, and in managing the stress resulting from illness. Even with our greatest challenges, mindfulness can teach us to live more satisfying lives, and to nurture

our health and well-being.

THE 8-WEEK CLASS: The course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction runs for eight weeks, Monday nights, 7-9:30, Oct. 18-Dec. 6. Classes are approximately 2 1/2 hours long. Each class consists of lead meditations, gentle movement exercises, didactic lecture, and group discussion. The course also includes an all-day session on Saturday, December 4. Between classes, students deepen their participation by practicing 40 minutes a day with meditation CDs, and can do optional readings from the course textbook, Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn. A free introductory class takes place on October 4, 7-9pm, at Harmony Yoga Studio in Berkeley.
