A major equine publication (Equus) that is read by many thousands of
horse enthusiasts has issued a preliminary report regarding a possible
case of SCID in a Caspian foal. Many knowledgeable horse people will
be aware of SCID in the Arabian breed; noting that it was years before
carriers of SCID were identified.
At this point in time there is only the one case as noted in Equus.
The CHSA board has asked Dr. Gus Cothran to make a statement. As soon
as we receive his comment you will be notified.
Note one case does not constitute a breed problem. The SCID must be
documented by Vets that have followed the illness and then concluded
with a necropsy. This is not an individual's analysis of their
stock. The SCID is only found in foals, and they usually die before 5
months of age.
SCID in laymen terms means born without an immune system. The foal
can live off the mare's immune system for a few weeks but will then
begin to exhibit medical problems.
We encourage each of you to be assured we are talking to veterinarians
that have experience with SCID. Many articles can be found on SCID.
Read with caution, we cannot become experts by reading what others
have spent years learning. At this time there is not a test for SCID
for the Caspian.
