Hello Rosie,
Sorry to hear of your drama with Shakira, but relieved to also hear of the happier outcome!
I have something in my First Aid Kit that would have been extremely useful in your situation.
Nettex Equine Rapid - known by myself, friends and customers as the MAGIC MIXTURE...
I used their Puppy Drops for reviving fading Chihuahua puppies over many years and it cut our mortality rate greatly. Then I discovered they make same for farm animals and one for horses - so every newborn foal gets a small dose of that as soon after birth as possible just to give them an extra boost.
The liqued is a brown syrup of concentrated glucose, with vitamins and minerals in a special base which does not need to be swallowed as it is absopbed by the membranes of the mouth and upper digestive tract - hence it is perfect for small animals which are in danger of breathing fluids into their lungs (cause of majority of fatalities with tiny puppies!). Only a few drops are needed every time and the effects are seen within a few minutes. It is mostly used for sick or young animals but is also useful for any that aren't eating, not eating enough, scouring and for competition if a small amount is given half an hour before hard work - we call it Rocket Fuel!
I had visitors one day viewing my Part-Caspian Miniatures in the yard. It was pouring down and they were running around showing off, when a tiny filly fell in a muddy puddle and had to be fished out and dried off. She was showing signs of shock, so whilst she was being dried off, I brought the mixture, gave her a small syringe and within minutes she was struggling to get up and run with her friends. It was like watching a film when the half-dead hero struggles to his feet and does something amazing - as though nothing had happened! That breeder was thoroughly amazed, and now several years later she is breeding with that same mare and swears by the magic mixture.
Google, Nettex Equine Rapid to find an online supplier.
Meanwhile I hope Shakira is still doing well and that our magic mixture might be of help in the future.
best Wishes,
Debbie.
