Attestation

Today, while updating my working version of the hyperglossary, "attest" and "attestation" has caught my beady eye.

Seems to me it's more significant and taken more seriously than a statement or pronouncement (or press release or live interview), but to be frank I'm not entirely sure why.  

Here's what I have so far:

Quite wordy already, and yet I'm not sure it captures it.  I've likened attestation to an oath ... and today added a few words about  being trust-based (merely hinting that untrustworthy attesters are, well, not to be trusted!  I gather some naughty people lie under oath - gosh!). 

What do you think?  Comments, criticisms and improvement suggestions (including better formal/quotable definitions, other angles and rephrasing) gratefully accepted.
