Friend, colleagues, cybersecurity pros,

The Cybersecurity Hyperglossary book remains on track for publication at the end of this year.  Here’s a quick update on recent progress:
  • A website is up-and-running at Hyperglossary.com

I hope you like the graphics,
definitions extracted from the hyperglossary overlaid on images representing hyperconnected digital information.  Eye-catching, I think, with a splash of colour to brighten up the otherwise drab text-based content.  Although the website is primarily designed for desktops, I will continue working on the mobile layout, resisting the urge to write reams for those with diminutive screens, and learning how best to use the whizzy Wix animations.  A work-in-progress.  Feedback, improvement suggestions and bright ideas are very welcome.

  • I've launched this email reflector/forum - a Google Group - to debate the terminology, definitions and hyperglossary format.   This supports my cunning plan to coordinate and ideally align our terminology globally, particularly for the core terms of art - something that will undoubtedly take years to achieveThe starting point is to get chatting and draw our professional peers into the debate, so  I'd appreciate your assistance to get this going, inviting colleagues and contacts to join the free hyperglossary forum using the big red button at www.hyperglossary.com/hyperglossaryforum

  • A foreword introducing the book's purpose, utility and value is well on the way with a page from one well-known figure already in the bank and another currently in prep.

  • I am seeking explicit permissions from copyright holders to quote definitions from their cited reference sources - mostly smaller glossaries.  Although technically this may fall under the fair use provisions of copyright law or Creative Commons and similar licensing, informing the originators is a courtesy I'm happy to extend to my fellow authors.  Hopefully, professional organisations such as SANS, OCEG, OWASP, the IIA, IRMBOK, ISACA and ISO/IEC will appreciate the value of this approach for their communities and welcome the publicity -  a win-win I believe.

  • The publisher - Taylor & Francis - is presently mitgrating my original manuscript from MS Word ino their professional typesetting software. Evidently this involves manually recreating all the hyperlinked cross-references that are essential to the hyperglossary format - an enormous and meticulous task given the sheer number of URLs (tens of thousands!). The digital eBook version will offer intuitive navigation, allowing readers to jump quickly, easily and directly between related terms and definitions as they browse the content.  Looking-up related entries in the printed book will require some manual dexterity and slow things down a bit, meaning more time to reflect on the content.

  • The editor has been busy supporting a new editorial assistant this month, coordinating the publication process ... and doing her best to hold me to the tight timeline.  Soon I'll be proofreading and presumably participating in the publisher's pre-printing publication preparations. Perhaps. 😁

  • Meanwnile, in the lead-up to the book's release in December (hopefully), I am ramping-up the promotional efforts, starting with LinkeDin and the ISO27k Forum, plus this newsletter and the website.  Here too I'd welcome your assistance to spread the word among your contacts and peers, particularly on Whatsapp, X, Facebook and other social media that I don't use.  Please nudge people gently towards Hyperglossary.com, clicking the big red buttons to join the fun here.

I plan to provide occasional updates like this one primarily through the hyperglossary forum, hopefully without spamming anyone.  Meanwhile, thank you for your interest in the Cybersecurity Hyperglossary, and for your patience as the publication process proceeds apace.

Kind regards/Ngā mihi,
