Humboldt: Crazy?

The summer of 1980 went quickly. Leo left "The Hit" live on the Rocky
Ridge, and working in Pathlow on the apiary was a learning
experience. They are tame bees, but the don't like loosing their
honey, either. It takes about 50 trips for the bee to make one
teaspoon of honey, and they have an issue with loosing their honey.
The bee beards you might have seen on Television are interesting.
But, the bees are just going to a queen. The bees are happy! We all
need a queen. The bees are not so happy when you steal their honey.
The stolen crates from the hive are heavy with honey. "The Hit"
carried 30 - 80 pound crates to the flatbed truck and trailer as the
wild flowers, Alfalfa, and Canola gave up their honey to the
protective little bees. The bees worked. It's interesting that many
honey bees don't make it home because they wear the outer edges of
their wings off after 3 - 4 weeks during peak honey time .
Eventually, they just don't make it home with a little more honey.
Fall approached in the apiary as "The Hit" approached moving day in
Burnaby.

In the spring of 1980, "The Hit" traded his YZ dirt bike for a 1979
Yamaha Special bike from Dave Gruntman who lived west of St. Brieux.
He used the bike to get back and forth to work in Pathlow that
summer. It was just a quick ride on the # 368 Grid from St. Brieux to
Pathlow, and the spring wound into the summer. Tim and "The Hit"
would have a few beers on occasion in the Pathlow hotel, and after a
hard week of work "The Hit" was stopped by the Melfort RCMP on his way
home to St. Brieux. The RCMP smelt alcohol on his breath, and the
drove him into Melfort 16 miles north of Pathlow. Fate would have it
that he failed the breath test, and "The Hit" was charged with
operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol over .08. He tested .
082 in the Melfort RCMP detachment, and he was released that night.
He called Leo to pick him up in Melfort, and "The Hit" was once again
in trouble with the law that summer.

In Melfort, The Judge suggested that "The Hit" could take time to pay
off his fine. "The Hit" calmly explained that he was going back to
the University of Saskatchewan, and there would be no money for
payments. There was even some talk of what "The Hit" would consider
paying over the next year. "The Hit" said he was not capable of
paying the fine, and he did not want to mislead the court. After some
discussion the Judge sentenced "The Hit" to 10 days on Friday August
22 TH 1980, and the Judge expressed his concern that "The Hit" should
go to Urban Camp rather than the Prince Albert Penitentiary. "The
Hit" spent the weekend in Melfort, before his was driven to Prince
Albert for one night in holding on August 25 TH. He was driven to the
Prince Albert Urban Camp situated in a horse arena on August 26 TH,
and he worked off his fine. He was able to fight fire for one day,
and he cleaned the puck marks off the Prince Albert hockey arena
glass. He was released August 29 TH for good behaviour, and he was
given a bus ticket back to Melfort. His debt to society was paid.

The First Continental Congress is where delegates from twelve British
North American colonies met on September 5, 1774, in Philadelphia.
The Congress was represented by 56 members appointed by the
legislatures of the Thirteen Colonies. The Congress met briefly to
consider options, organize an economic boycott of British trade,
publish a list of rights and grievances, and petition King George to
address those grievances. The Congress called for another Continental
Congress in the event that their petition was unsuccessful in halting
their perceived enforcement of the Intolerable Acts of King George.
Their appeal to the Crown had no effect, and so the Second Continental
Congress was convened the following year to organize the defence of
the colonies at the onset of the American Revolutionary War.

Tonkin Gulf Resolution

The United States sent military aircraft to fight another popular
rebellion in the Congo (Zaire) once again in 1967 along with
logistical support to quell the revolt. Ironically, the Americans
suffered losses in the USS Liberty incident in 1967 when the Israeli
armed forces killed 34 and wounding more than 170 U.S. with their
American made Aircraft. The deaths inspired the Americans. They
broke their Gulf of Tonkin resolution of 1968 when they started
bombing the Ho Chi Minh trail of the sovereign nations of Cambodia and
Laos for the next two years. The secret bombings were initially to
"support freedom and protect peace in Southeast Asia" according to
President Johnson who had asked Congress for the Tonkin Gulf
Resolution. The attacks on sovereign nations became the American way
of life. America bombed Cambodia, the Viet Cong, North Vietnamese,
and civilians from April 30 to June 30 in the 1970 while some thought
they were leaving the theatre rather than attacking US and South
Vietnamese forces in Vietnam. The American people were told the
Tonkin Gulf Resolution covered these attacks to ensure the continuing
safe withdrawal of American forces from South Vietnam.

"The Hit" packed a load into Bob's Subaru Legacy, and he brought his
first load of stuff into 910 Victoria Drive on Thursday March 20 TH.
Jack had a gas fitter coupling the new gas stove to the gas line, and
the place was finally finished. Bob and "The Hit" hauled in a load,
while Jack, Steve, and Ray admired the new place. They did a good
job, and Jack and "The Hit" settled the balance of March's rent. When
he returned to the house he was supposed to get keys from Paul (Jack's
Manager) because Jack did not have duplicates made yet. "The Hit"
returned to Burnaby for another load, and when Bob and "The Hit"
returned and Jack, Steve, and Ray had left for the day. "The Hit"
unpacked the next load, and he set up his computer room in the
kitchen, and he had his bed in the bedroom. It was a tight squeeze,
but he had a good view of the school across the street from his window
as he worked at his computer desk. He arranged to leave the couch and
chair Barb and he had bought at Garth's house, and David came by to
check out the new digs over the next few days. "The Hit" was settled
into the Vancouver East Side.

Little Manitou Lake

The last week of March went quickly on Victoria Drive, and Sveta
started on a C application to help sort in changes to the database for
$50.00 American. "The Hit" brought in a phone, cable television, and
high speed Internet access using Telus DSL services. The Hit started
to walk to Commercial Drive on a daily basis. There were regular
trips to Normans Fruit and Salad, and Super Valu on Commercial Drive,
and "The Hit" tried to get out on the drive on a daily basis. He
wrote a letter to Garth's mother letting her know that he would give
her and Garth something out of his share if David was able to keep the
project funded. He tried to explain that he needed a partner who
could handle the business end of the project, and Garth had a lot on
his plate at the time. "The Hit" explained that he had not touched
the money in the HSBC account since David has suggested their
partnership. There was over $2000.00 in the account for her and
Garth. He was sorry for leaving them, however he had every intent of
considering them seed money out of his shares. Life on Commercial had
no Black Van, however it was no bed of roses either.

St. Brieux Credit Union: Fast Cat's

The weekend wore through Saturday night and Sunday, as "The Hit"
digested his situation. The television computer barked out the
controversy of the PacifiCats costs being built by BC Ferries, because
the PacifiCat Explorer was falling behind schedule and way over cost.
The ships was being built in the Vancouver Shipyards by the NDP (New
Democratic Party) to improve the capacity, speed, and service along
the Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver). They were considered to become the
"Fast Cat's" while "The Hit" waited for Monday to call the St. Brieux
Credit Union. Leo and "The Hit" had talked about their father Henry.
The town drunk died in the spring of 1997. He drank heavily all his
life. He was the town drunk in a town of 300 people with one tavern.
The town drunk not only drank himself to death, but he was a really
ugly drunk while doing it. "The Hit" worked his way through the
weekend, and he phoned the St. Brieux Credit Union in Saskatchewan
regarding the estate on Monday the 17 TH of November 1997 in the
morning.
