Hi Everyone,

My name is Jessica Ma and I'm with the FACEHumanRights.org projects at
Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. We are trying to build an
online human rights journal that is for students, by students. We hope
to give a voice to student activists in human rights. We want to give
students a chance to research and investigate human rights abuses, form
networks with other students and grassroots organizations, provide a
pool of resources and scholarship/internship/job opportunities, and
provide virtual spaces for classes in different countries around the
world.

We've developed this survey for students because we want to know what
students are looking for in a site like this, whether they've
encountered similar sites, and what they like or don't like or want to
see more of in an activist site. We'd like to hear as many ideas as
possible from students like you because we want to make this something
*you'll* want to use -- so it would be really great if you could fill
out this survey and send it back to us at jessim AT rutgers DOT edu.

We have more information about the upcoming website at
http://cgsd.rutgers.edu/face.shtml

Thank you!
Jessica Ma

STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRE

The Center for Global Security and Democracy at Rutgers University is
creating an online human rights journal for students. In contrast to
much current human rights activ-ism in which student voices are
marginalized, we want to build a thriving community where students can
network with others like them around the world, plan and participate in
grassroots actions, and find the resources to accomplish their own
activist goals.

Among other things, we hope to give students a space to:

- conduct investigative journalism and get published
- find human rights internships, scholarships, and travel opportunities
- plan and take action on an global scale

As a student, what would your main purpose in coming to
facehumanrights.org be? Read other student's reporting? Network? Find
stuff for class? Make friends in other countries? Get internships
overseas? Do stuff to pump up your resume? What else?

How can facehumanrights.org help you get to know other students around
the world? Would you like to see a bigger emphasis on yourself/them as
human rights ac-tivists or yourself/them as individuals coming to find
like-minded people?

How would you like to connect with students around the world on
facehuman-rights.org (from instant messaging to participating in
rallies)? Be creative!

We would like to create an environment that gives students as much
flexibility and freedom as possible to form connections with other
students, come up with joint ideas, and execute projects on their own
with other students, etc. What kinds of help do you think would be
useful to you as you do so? Access to a network of NGOs for advice?
Public relations opportunities? How can facehumanrights.org help?

What would you like to see on facehumanrights.org that you don't see
on other sites? How can we make this site unique from other activist
sites?

What kinds of projects would you like to initiate and plan on your own
(through the resources that would be available on facehumanrights.org
or not)?

We're looking at an age group of 6-26, which means elementary school
kids, mid-dle/high school students, undergrads, and grad students. What
do you think you'll be able to share with others in other age groups?

What networking sites do you belong to or really like or visit pretty
often (i.e., The-FaceBook, Hi5, MySpace, MakeOutClub.com)? What
features do you really like? What features or other stuff do you really
hate?

What activism sites do you belong to or visit a lot (Sierra Club,
Amnesty Interna-tional, Idealist.org)? What features do you really
like? What features have you always wished they had but...? Are there
things about these sites that just drive you crazy?
