Yoopers, Wolverines, and Buckeyes – The Toledo War of 1835
In 1835, Michigan was poised for admission as a State in the Union, but a long-standing boundary dispute with Ohio threatened to delay the process.
In a volatile mix of political egos, comic-opera military maneuvers, and questionable legal tactics, an armed conflict loomed on the horizon. The cast of characters seeking to resolve the problem included such figures as “the boy governor,” “Old Hickory,” “Two Stickney” and members of “the frosty-bitten Convention.”
Michigan lost a few hundred square miles of territory – and gained an empire of copper, iron, and lumber.
Echoes of the “Toledo War” still resound today. Hear the facts, meet the cast, and judge for yourself – are the real winners…Yoopers…Wolverines…or Buckeyes? Attend the Ionia County Genealogical Society program on Saturday, April 8th at 1:00 p.m. and find out! The event will be held at the Freight Station Museum, 1117 Emerson Street, Lake Odessa, MI.
Tom Barrett, the guest speaker, is a retired Social Studies teacher with 30 years of classroom experience at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History at Michigan State University, his Masters, also in History, at Eastern Michigan. He and his wife, Geri, have engaged in genealogical research for over 18 years and Tom is currently serving as the president of the Dearborn Genealogical Society.
