Hope for the Children - A Midnight PBEM
As if in answer to the dworg's suggestion, one of the dwarven women
crashed to the rocky floor; she just didn't have enough strength to
get back up by her own means.
RPG: It had been a good day after all for them, after the hardship of
their frenzied flight from the Legate's forces. They had food in
their bellies, Grakram had finally managed to stop his bleeding by
heating a dagger in the small fire they had used to cook the orts and
using the red-hot blade to sear his wound. His night had been fevered
and painful, but in the morning the legendary dwarven constitution had
won out and he was on his feet.
In fact, he was feeling almost cheerful with their goal finally
approaching, so he didn't waste any time in going to the aid of the
exhausted woman, muttering a few curses as he helped her up and allowed
her to lean against his shoulder (Having thrown his cloak over the
armour spikes there so as not to injure her).
"We be close, aye, but we still might be leadin' the Shadowspawn
intae the mine, even if they be outta our sight," the dwarven warrior
growled. "Wouldn't mind spendin' a night with a mountain over me
head like it be proper, but I still think we mighta be better off not
goin' all the way, not all o' us. Say, one o' us tae escort 'em
crones an' whelps the rest o' the way, and tae requisition some
supplies fer the rest o' us, while the rest movin' on towards the
pointy-ears' forest so we can git that bloody toy-box off our
hands."
"That'd mean either me or Urokk goin' with the survivors;
manlings wouldn't be made welcome by me kin, not without hours an'
days spent tae make sure they be clean o' the taint."

NRPG: It's time like these when having the Endurance feat pays off
;^) And he has enough carrying capacity left to possibly even carry the
woman if necessary.
-Jussi / Grakram
Over the past couple of days Greta's iron will had
returned after her breakdown and she was happy for
that. At least, she would have felt happy were she
capable of that but the void had returned with a
vengeance, crushing every speck of emotion that
threatened to rise to the surface. But it also served
her well because she was able to push herself and make
it through the forced march without feeling much at
all. She knew she was hungry only because she was
aware she hadn't eaten for two days, she did not feel
even a twinge of hunger. And when they were near the
end of the march Greta looked at the refugees with her
impassive gaze. She saw how exhausted they were but
this time she felt nothing for them. Soon enough they
would be safe and out of their hands.
[Grakram/old]
"manlings wouldn't be made welcome by me kin, not
without hours an' days spent tae make sure they be
clean o' the taint."
[Greta/new]
Greta leaned up against a rock wall and thought about
Grakram's suggestion. Then Urokk added that he did
not think he would be very welcome either, leaving
Grakram as the only one who could escort the refugees
onward.
"If we start heading back west immediately, won't get
too far ahead for you to catch up to us?" Greta asked
Grakram.
[tag Grakram]
"And won't we need to think of a different path to
take back west? I don't think simply turning around
and retracing our steps is going to be a good idea. If
there is a force tracking us we're going to need to
get around them somehow." Greta added looking at the
rest of the group.

REF: "If we start heading back west immediately, won't get too far

RPG: The dwarf harrumphed. "Need be, I'll jog throughout the
night," he grunted, all seriousness. "Ain't gonna croak fer lack
o' a bit o' sleep, an' I know the terrain as well as any here. Ye
tell me what path ye think o' takin', I'll find ye. An' we can
agree on some trail marks ye'll leave behind if ye be forced tae
alter plans."

be a good idea. If there is a force tracking us we're going to need to

RPG: "Oh, there be paths an' paths," Grakram said. "Some a
small band unencumbranced with whelps sick from hunger an' loss can
take. An' find them we shall, for merely turnin' trail certainly
won't do."

What I would like is to have enough of a 'plan' to recap once I get back. What we need to
'solve' is the method of 'dumping' the dwarven refugees.
L8r,
[Grakram / old]
"Oh, there be paths an' paths," Grakram said. "Some a small band unencumbranced with whelps sick from hunger an' loss can take. An' find them we shall, for merely turnin' trail certainly won't do."
[Brew / new]
“Avoiding whoever is following us may not be in their best interest,” Brew motioned to the women and children. “What we need to do is find a way to get them to safety without alerting our pursuers. We’ve eluded them for now but they aren’t likely to give up. They know our original direction so they have an idea of where to search. It would be best if they don’t find us before the children are safely away.”
Brew turned as best he could to Grakram while maintaining his illusion, “If we split up, the children should be under the protection of my illusion. If for no other reason than because they could travel a bit slower without fear of detection. If either of the two groups were to be detected, I’d rather it be the warriors. At least they will still be moving and can lead them away.”
[tag]
“What we need is a reason for traveling this way – other than getting the women and children to safety. We need to head west but if we simply turn back we’ll end up either running into our pursuers or giving away the approximate position of the dwarven enclave.” Brew thought for a minute, “It would make sense for us to try to loose our pursuers in a difficult trail… one that a larger group of orcs would have a hard time following. Is there something like that around here? If there is a shortcut that Grakram [and I] can use to meet up with the rest, that’d be perfect.”
[tag]
“One last thing, perhaps to be discussed later,” Brew added. “The enemy knows the make up of our group. If the dwarves want to use this to their advantage, they could send back with Grakram [and me] a group of warriors. We could make sure we were found and we could lead the orcs into a trap. That would be up to them though.”

[Urokk -

"There's always different ways," Urokk replied, "But the tougher routes
are not for the children, there's nothing we can send them on that would not be
easier for orcs. But the rest of us can lead them astray. And hope that
when they pick up our trail they follow that, rather than yours"

"This is true," Urokk mused, "But there is no point getting a couple of re-enforcements if it turns out there are a hundred orcs out there. We need to know what their made of. I suggest we scope out our pursuers and find out the sort of numbers we're talking about, then we can determine what sort of trap we require."

.
Kruack sat and listen to the others go back and forth over which is best to
do and when to do it.
(Grakram / Old)
"That'd mean either me or Urokk goin' with the survivors; manlings wouldn't
be made welcome by me kin, not without hours an'
days spent tae make sure they be clean o' the taint."
[Urokk - Old]
Urokk remembered his life, or what passed for such, amongst his old clan.
He had no desire to show his face at a clan hold that was not Durgis Rock,
"I'll stay," He said. "Orc spawn aren't exactly welcome among your kind.
I'll know if they're heading your way and I can run faster than a marching
army to warn you. Just make sure the look outs know a dworg will be coming,
it makes it hard to run with cross bow bolts in one's torso."
(Kruack/ New)
Kruack just sat and nodded in agreement with the pair remembering his first
encounter with the dworg;
(Grakram / Old)
"Oh, there be paths an' paths," Grakram said. "Some a small band
unencumbranced with whelps sick from hunger an' loss can
take. An' find them we shall, for merely turnin' trail certainly won't do."
[Urokk - Old]

not for the children, there's nothing we can send them on that would not be
easier for orcs. But the rest of us can lead them astray. And hope that
when they pick up our trail they follow that, rather than yours"
(Kruack/ New)
Seemingly the conversation has slowed between them so kruack decided that
now would be a good time, as he stood and faced the group, You all stress
good points.. The woman and children need to be safe and quickly, We need to
get West and we need to lead whomever is following us away from here.
Urokk and Grakram you to know the terrain here the best, so the chosing of
paths would be best left to you to decide which to take and which to meet
back up upon, I agree with brew he should continue with you grakram to the
mine and help keep thngs hidden from view ganwin should follow and hide the
tracks for a short while at least.
The rest of us will change paths and leave a noticable trail behind, maybe
we can make it look like a fight took place here and retreated/contiued in a
slighty different direction possibly work our way around the group following
us where we could end up behind them and possible tell what size of a force
might be trailing us
Here's a turn so far; lots of good ideas but no decision yet.
Here are the options:
- Grakram (and Brew) take the refugees to Silver Mine ( the mine's entrance is hidden
BTW);
- the rest of the group goes west via the same path or another path;
- the groups will rendezvous later;
- other plans?
I'll need to know before puttig together the next turn. Yu may discuss this in or out of
character.
Game on!
RPG: Grakram glowered at the human, yet held his tongue. The warlock
and his illusions would certainly come in handy, and how much Grakram
had learned to loathe Brew and his loudly voiced opinions, there were
the lives of children and women at stake.
"Aye, ye do just that," the dwarf muttered, taking care not to so
much as look at Brew to make very sure he was doing this against his
better judgment.
REF: "This is true," Urokk mused, "But there is no point getting a
couple of reinforcements if it turns out there are a hundred orcs out
there. We need to know what their made of. I suggest we scope out our
pursuers and find out the sort of numbers we're talking about, then we
can determine what sort of trap we require."
RPG: "Ye see 'em, ye risk bein' seen in turn. Or smelled out,"
Grakram growled. "An' there be a lot o' lives put at risk if ye
ain't as stealthy as he think ye be. Best we keep our distance an'
lead 'em away. The world won't be made right by killin' this
bunch." Though it pained the dwarf to admit that; he firmly believed
the world *was* a better place for every Shadowspawn they put to the
sword.
[Greta/new]
Greta had been silent while Urokk and Brew had offered
their suggestions on what to do and the plan that was
developing seemed to be sound. The whole group
couldn't all head toward the dwarfhold without giving
away the location to the enemy and Greta had no
objection to serving as part of the diversion group.
"I agree with the plan, divide into two groups, one
lead our pursuers away, while the refugees are taken
to Silver Mine." Greta said, her voice devoid of
emotion.
"Beyond that I don't have anything more to say really,
other than we should start this plan soon."
Having spoken her mind, Greta lowered her head, hiding
her eyes beneath the hood of her cloak. Her mind
wandered, thinking mostly about food. She
unconsciously licked her lips as she pictured roast
venison, pan fried fish, and other things she had not
had since she left to come to the mountains. She
couldn't wait to get out of the mountains and back
into terrain she was used to.
So the plan is Brew and Grakram with the women and children. Ganwin make sure our trail is hidden and then the rest create a diversionary path. After Brew and Grakram drop off the survivors, we meet up at a predetermined spot or on a path that Grakram and Urokk both know? If this is so, Brew is all for it.
