Hope for the Children - A Midnight PBEM
Greta's eyes narrowed in suspicion as she watched the
wolf pack retreat. She stood guard over the wounded
gnomes and watched the wolves go. Greta glanced back
at the gnomes and saw that Athur was greivously
wounded and would be dead shortly and Wendell was in
bad shape as well.
"Brew, Kruack, someone help the gnomes, quickly,"
Greta said, her voice devoid of the urgency she was
requesting from her comrades.
[tag all]
Greta looked at her own wounds and was not very
concerned. She was hurt, but not badly. She felt a
twinge of disappointment that none of the wolves had
fallen; their fur would have been useful. Greta
quickly washed her wounds and bound them up as best
she could.
[later]
Greta looked at the old watch tower and at her
comrades. The wolves had likely been scouts of some
sort for the enemy, she thought. Should they push on,
despite the desperate need for rest? Or would they
risk a night of sleep, gambling that the Shadow would
not catch up to them? Greta turned to her comrades.
"What shall we do? Those wolves were likely spies of
the Shadow, do we dare stop and rest here for a while
or should we push on? I could walk until I drop dead
of exhaustion, so I care not which option we pursue,"
she stated in a matter of fact tone.

Not for the first time, Urokk ignored his wounds. Wounds always healed, unfortunately. He would not die to day. He was more concerned about the gnomes, but he could do nothing about it. He knew those who could would. The question was now, 'was it safe to stay where they were?' It was a defensible position but the enemy knew where they were.

Urokk looked back and forth between his comrades. None of them looked capable of marching further but most were fit enough to fight. "I say we stay here." He growled though over size canines. "I am fed up of running. We have fought on this ground before, it'll be an advantage to us."

[Brew / new]
Brew shook his head as if in a dream. He had been so shocked to see the wolves that he almost hadn’t reacted. He had just stood there, dumbfounded, until the end. He had found the voice to cast the spell… but then watched in horror at the result. The large wolf had been employed by the shadow! It was clear. Brew stumbled back, eyes wide. The others took little notice of the man’s behaviour as he was prone to falling over anyhow. But the look on his face… Greta saw it and her intense stare drew the others.
Brew’s face was ashen and his lips quivered, “We’ve got to go… we’ve got to go now!”

“Don’t you see… didn’t you see how that large wolf reacted? It was after us! Stalking us but then it just… changed! Didn’t you see?” Brew exclaimed.
Kruack tried to calm the old man, “Sure, you scared it off with your…”
Brew turned on the man, screeching, “No, you fool! That animal was under the control of the shadow! It knows we are here! It will find another animal to inhabit and report to its master – if it master doesn’t know already... We’ve got to leave. Who knows how close they are to us? They could be here in hours…”
“Or days,” the Dwarf grumbled.
“Sure, YOU take that chance!” Brew exploded. “I, for one, don’t want to sit around here and hope they won’t find us.” Brew was panting from the exertion.

Kruack took a quick look around and noticed the most injured was the
gnomes.. He quickly made his way to athurs side and quickly tended to his

Brew you need to clam down and get ahold of yourself for a minute, I sense
your urgance here but if we move them "looks owards the gnomes" they will
surly die in this state.
The wildlander finshed what he could do and proceeded to stand and face the
rest of the group, Brew I do agree with you we do need to move, but since
they already know we are here can you spin your ways to heal them some so it
would safe to move them then we can carry them for awhile.
[Greta/old]
Greta quickly washed her wounds and bound them up as best she could.
(Kruack/New)
Greta, Urokk you two doing ok? Well enough to travel? The wildlander checked
himself over being sure his armor was fasten securly and sheathed his sword
and turned to urokk and grakram one of you willing to carry a gnome for
awhile?

like that we do not know anything about what is coming and it be be
defensible position but also a one that we just as well get trapped into and
if there is any of those stone ceatures with them we will surely go down as
well we know what happened the last time brew extended himself to far

Let's roll for this as your use of the 'book' that channelers have. Let me know the
specifics and we'll roll for that.
I'm not sure when you want to do this, but remember that it's night right now, isn't it
always? :)
Greta, Urokk you two doing ok? Well enough to travel?

[Greta/new]
Greta shrugged her shoulders. Her wounds were minor,
even without the void they would not have bothered her
much.
"These wounds do not trouble me, Kruack," Greta
replied, "I could walk another week if necessary."
In the back of her mind she felt a flicker of doubt, a
twinge of regret that they would not be getting a
solid night of rest and sleep. With a slight frown
Greta turned her back to the group and concentrated on
the void. This was no time for weakness.
RPG: Grakram wiped his axe clean on a patch of moss growing on a rock
and nodded his eager agreement to the dworg's words. Contrary to all
the fierce looks, the wolves had proven most unsporting foes, running
away with their tails between their legs before the battle was truly
even begun. The dwarf had shouted and cursed for them to come back to
face his axe, but the bests hadn't heard or cared.
"Aye, let's stay here an' bloody 'em critters good," Grakram
growled. "Better we face 'em here, where the terrain offers some
protection. Though if we be forced tae flee, we mighta find that hard
if the critters be right at our heels." The dwarf shrugged his
shoulders, indifferent to the possibility of death.
Though, on the other hand... they had been tasked to take the bloody
case to the pointy-ears, and the Dorthane of his adopted clan had added
his voice to the plea. And now he wielded the fallen leader's axe...
that was an obligation for him right there, strong as stone. Perhaps it
took precedence over his quest for a worthy death after all.
A thoughtful frown on his face, Grakram weighted the options.
TAG: Everyone interested...
NRPG: Grakram wants to stay and fight, but that should be no news. He
can be persuaded to go, though he'll be very vocal against it.
-Jussi / Grakram
[Greta/new]
Greta look at Urokk, her gaze neutral and her
expression betraying nothing.
"Perhaps we could ambush them on this ground and
defeat them...if they are few. But what if there is a
warband following us? What if they have ogres or
trolls or a legate with them? With the magic involved
with those wolves, a legate is likely. We know nothing
of the force pursuing us, if a fight has to be made
Ganwin's idea is the best option but we need to know
what we are dealing with before we decide to stand and
fight. Otherwise..."
Greta shrugged her shoulders. The consequences of
their failure were obvious, she felt.

Does the group stay and rest for the night or is the group pushing forward?
I'd like to recap tonight maybe, certainly this weekend.

(OOC Sorry for my silence. I hope I am not to late to tag this on the end of the turn recap.)
Urokk growled in defiance at the group's decision. But then perhaps they were not so ready to die as he was. The dworg did not blame them for, (what was the word Brew had used?) 'cowards'. He was not fully aware of what the word meant and had he been so, he would have more likely used the word to describe himself. The others were prepared to continue against all odds, to fight this never ending battle, but he would be glad to lay down his life for a little peace, a rest from the running.
Disgruntled, Urokk marched over to Wendel and roughly picked the gnome up, slinging him over his shoulder like a sack. Without looking back to see if the others were following, he stormed off down the path.
As time went on the dworg began to settle down and slow to allow the others to catch up. He let Wendel down to walk a little and stretch before picking him up more gently this time. His mood relaxed and he began to think that the decision was not so bad after all. And perhaps rather than lamenting the fact that he had lost the clan, he thought that he should be glad to have found another. After an initial misunderstanding, his new companions seemed to accept him for who he was, even follow his lead at times. Perhaps he should place his trust in these people.
I'm sorry but the turn will have to wait until tomorrow. Unfortunately, I got hooked on
Battlestar Galactica (2nd season DVD lent by a friend) so my writing time has been cut
down for a few days. :(

[ooc – I know this is late – Fabian, if you want to incorporate this into the recap, then maybe that is best]
[Urokk / old]
After an initial misunderstanding, his new companions seemed to accept him for who he was, even follow his lead at times. Perhaps he should place his trust in these people.
[Brew / new]
Something was gnawing at the human… he couldn’t quite place it. Something… They trudged on – tired, hurt, ready to drop. Still, the human couldn’t help but feel like he was missing something, something important…
Do you want me to tell you?
“Bite me!” Brew replied. His outbursts had become so commonplace that the others seemed to have stopped noticing. This did nothing de-motivate the human from trying to cover up his conversations. “I don’t need your help!”
Sure you don’t. You’ve got it all together! You’re the picture of sanity. Look how they all follow your every whim?! Look how much sway you have over them!
Whim… it was an odd choice of words for a voice that used language so precisely. Maybe not always civilly, not directly, but precisely. The voice knew how to direct his thoughts, how to steer him with only a word. And this time the word had been ‘whim.’
Brew reached into his pack and fished down to the bottom. Removing a flap that would have fooled all but the most attentive of searchers, Brew withdrew a scroll. He tucked his cane under his arm and trotted forward to catch up with the others. The scroll looked as if it was tattered and torn at the edges but a closer inspection revealed that these were colored pieces of string tied to the outside of the ‘paper.’ Whatever the scroll was made of, it seemed more robust than your garden variety parchment any of the others had ever seen. Brew tilted the scroll in to and fro trying to make the best use of the moonlight. Finally, he found what he was looking for and began to spin the two wooden knobs feeding one end of the parchment to the other as he tried to locate the correct spot. Finally satisfied he opened the scroll, causing him to drop his cane. Cursing, he picked up the cane and again secured it under his arm. Again tilting the scroll to catch the moonlight, his eyes darted back and forth as he read. After a few moments, he located a different piece of string and started the process over again. Two more times Brew repeated this process until finally he exclaimed, “Huh!”
“Huh what?” Someone asked.
“Well, I may have been a little hasty in thinking that creature could have contacted its master so soon. Apparently, there have been reports of these creatures communicating over distances but for the most part, those distances have been short. It may just be that the creature will have to make its way all the way back before it can report our previous location.” Brew paused, “I don’t thing we were wrong in leaving, but perhaps we aren’t under the eminent threat I thought we were.” Again Brew paused, “We could probably bed down for the night once we put a little more air between us and our last known position. If you all are willing to risk it, I could start administering some healing to the most needy as we travel. If we limit it to the times when we are moving and only once or twice a day, we should be fine.”
[tag]
“Personally, I like the idea of a trap,” Brew nodded at Ganwin, “but it would be better if it were something that we could set and leave behind. Something that would slow them would be enough. If we could figure out something that we could do quickly and replicate often, we could even use it as a diversion. If they get used to finding a trap from us every mile or so, we could stop setting them after a fork in the road and make them question whether they are on the right track.”
