HEY!!!

I know that people come and go but roasting is here to stay!!!

What do YOU roast with?

What is your favorite type of roast? Type of bean?

I roast with a Poppery II (soon to be replaced by a Swadlo Viennese)
I like a nice City roast
I really Like Sumatra

How many bags of your own roast have you handed out?

Time to wake this group up with some great roasting discussion.

I roast with a Nesco but I am saving up for a Behmor,

I prefer a full city plus roast but like to change it up

I love the Tanzanian Blackburn Estate and wish I could find some more of it somewhere

I gave away a bunch of coffee this past X mas and now my family keeps bugging me to send more.

I do roast with a Behmor. Before that, I used a wok on the stove. I like
lots of stuff, but really seek out coffees that have a "Dutch cocoa" flavor.

I'm very new, but I have a HotTop Basic and I've loved working with it. I realize after years of Starbucks, I didn't know what BOLD coffee tasted like until I got roasting.

I like to go dark and have currently tried to create some Espresso blends with limited success...

Anyhow, nice to be involved!

I have 2 Fresh Roast Plus 8 and a BBQ roaster. I have a lot of green beans.
Today I am drinking Colombian Huila Supremo that tastes great. My favorite
that I have right now is a Bolivian coffee from Angel Pamuri called Café
Apolo peabury that was a COE but what I bought couldn't be called that even
though it is.

Jim

I take it you are selling your excess green beans when you buy in quantity? www.jimscoffeebeans.com

Did you make your BBQ roaster drum or did you purchase it? What kinds of motor are you using? Speed? How are you checking the temp or roast level?
I started to make one and actually had it all together and on my first roast my heat diffuser cracked and burnt half the beans and the other half were still green so I went back to the drawing board and then threw away the board.

That Apolo bean sounds interesting.

I am wondering on finding that Tanzanian Blackburn Estate one site mentioned it would be "back mid 2009". Even Sweet Marias is out http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.africa.tanzania.php

The owner of the farm seems to very internet savvy as I see he replied to a couple web sites. http://homecoffeeroasters.today.com/2008/09/11/tanzania-blackburn-estate-aa/

I keep giving my coffee away to the teachers at my kids school. They need something nice to put up with my kids... ;-)
The teachers are now begging me to open a coffee cafe so I can just make the coffee for them,,,I think I have spoiled the teachers as well as my kids...

Actually I am trying to finance my coffee habit. I bought the drum roaster, I have the original motor that came with the rotisserie. My BBQ  has a thermometer on it. I like my Fresh Roast 8 plus the best but it only roasts a small amount.

I actually sent an email to  Micheal Gehrken (I think thats how you spell his name) who runs the Tanzanian Blackburn Estate thanking him for his blog comment ( I noticed he also commented on scotto's blog) and inquiring about the arrival of his next crop. He said he sent out 18 tons to the US, I am hoping that it is as good as last years and that Sweet Marias picks some up.

I understand on the paying off the home roast habit. I think I am spending about $50 every two months on green beans. I have been buying them from http://www.ccmcoffee.com and yes, the quality does not seem as top end as Sweet Maria's but for the price difference (and little actual difference in beans) I am willing to settle. Especially when anything I do is better then store bought. I have definitely purchased worse though.
I am now thinking about purchasing 25 lbs from http://ourcoffeebarn.com/wholesale as they buy from http://www.cafeimports.com/ and then resell in smaller lots. If I like the beans then I plan to make a larger (60 lb?) purchase directly from Cafe Imports. I plan on using some for myself but selling most of the beans for paying off my roaster.
This is so I can pay for my project roaster which is an older Swadlo roaster (see a similar unit go to http://blog.cafeverdeperu.com/2009/01/otto-swadlo-victoria-werk-roaster.html ). Mine needs some attention due to a fire in the exhaust and just all around old age but I have to find a spot at home for it first ;-)
