Hello! I'm a descendent of Mack Holt of Wake and Harnett Counties.
To my very pleasant surprise, I found a photograph of my g-
grandfather's family including my grandmother while perusing the Holt
Family of Chatham and Wake Counties, NC Google Group. It was the
first time I had seen a photograph of my grandmother, Nancy Elizabeth
and her family at her early age, likely mid-teens. I am very
interested in corresponding with Clayton and others to see if there
are more photographs or documents related to J. Mack, Alsey (Mack's
grandfather), George A.(Alsey's father), Richard Holt I (George A.'s
father). I have a great deal of information on Caswell Holt prior to
his death in 1863 and, of course, the information shared via this web
site regarding Elizabeth, or Betsey, Holt, Caswell's widow. Thanks
for responding! Nance

We are related. Nancy Elizabeth and my grandmother, Nula Mae Holt,
were sisters. I would love to get a copy of your photograph or
directions to the website you referenced. My info has Nancy Elizabeth
Holt married to Vesta Austin. Is that correct? Another question: I
do not have the parents of Caswell Holt born in Harnett County. Died
in 1888. I do not have any information on Betsy Cox's parents
either. Do you have this information?

Caswell Holt married Betsy Cox. James MacDonald Holt son of Caswell
Holt and Betsy Cox was born September 14, 1856. Died March 10, 1934
in Wake County, N.C. James MacDonald Holt was married to Emily Jane
Melvin. Does this data match with yours?

Hi, Jeanne! I'm so glad to meet another cousin, especially one of
Aunt Nula's descendents. I would like to correspond with you via e-
mail; however, it doesn't seem that this venue allows us to share our
e-mails with one another, or if it does, I don't know how. I noticed
that your e-mail has spaces underlined within your e-mail address.
I'll try to send you mine and see if it works: Ina...@Bellsouth.net

If we are unable to correspond via e-mail, I'll be happy to share what
I have with you within this group. Yes, Nancy Elizabeth did marry
Allen Sylvester (Vester) Austin. They had three children: Nora Mae,
Epsie Irene and Emily Lois, my mother.

The photograph that I found was on this site. If you go to the bottom
of the home page of this Google group, click to open All Files (there
are two), and the Mack Holt family file is indeed this photograph.
Your grandmother as well as all the siblings and James "Mack" Holt and
Emily Jane Melvin Holt are in the photograph, probably taken around
1900...my guess.

Caswell Holt, who married Elizabeth (Betsey) Cox, died in the U. S.
Civil War in 1863. He was born about 1835 in Chatham County, NC to
Alsey and Prudence Johnson Holt in Chatham County. I have copies of
his military service record as well as the pension files for his
widow, Elizabeth Cox Holt.

I have the birthdate for James Mack Holt as the 17th of September 1856
and his date of death as March 10, 1934. I noticed, too, Jeanne, that
you referred to our g-grandfather as James MacDonald Holt. That's the
name I have had for a long time, but, in recent months, I have found
that he is also listed as James MacDuffie Holt. I don't have any
family bible, etc. to verify his actual name. Do you have additional
information that could put this question to rest? He was married to
Emily Jane Melvin, and I have information on the Melvins and the
Weathers on her side of the family.

BTW, do you have additional older photographs of Mack and Emily Jane
Holt? I would really like to find some more older photographs. I
have quite a few of my grandmother and her siblings in later years,
1940s - 1960s.

Also, I have your grandmother's name listed as "Nulce"!?! When you
said "Nula Mae", I remembered "Aunt Nula". I wonder where "Nulce"
came from...maybe a census record...?

Hope to hear from you again and I hope that we can exchange e-mails
privately! Soon....Nan

J. Mack and Emily Jane Holt had a child in 1878 by the name of Ida,
and she was listed in the 1880 U. S. Census for Harnett County. By
the next available census (1900), Ida was not in the Mack and Emily
Holt household. Of course, she would have been 22 by 1900 and likely
married. Does anyone know who Ida Holt married or if there is another
reason that she didn't show up in the 1900 Census? Thanks for any
information. Nan

What did the M in Ida's middle name stand for?

There is an Albert F. Seagraves, wife Ida M. in the 1900 census.  Note spelling of last name.  They have been married 3 years, have 2 children.

There is a WWI Draft Registration Card for Albert Fonsy Seagroves, dated 1915.   It list his birth date as 13 june 1872.  He was living in New Hill, Wake, NC.  Wife, Ida is listed as next of kin.  There is a death record for Albert dated 16 Oct 1955.

There is a death record for Ida M. Seagroves dated 4 Jan 1963.

I have not found a marriage record for them.

Clayton,
I do not have the date for the marriage of Ida and Fonzie Seagroves.
My information came from a family bible that was transcribed by my
Aunt Corinne. I have the information in a letter from her dated
August 1, 1973. BTW, I was following a thread for Richard Mann to
daugther Prudence Mann who married Charles Johnson and I lost the
thread for Charles Johnson. Can you help me? I know their children's
names: Prudence, Charles, Jr., Daniel, James, John, Lucy, Nancy,
Elizabeth and Miriam BUT CANNOT FIND CHARLES JOHNSON a/k/a Charley
Johnston parents. Can you help me?

Nance,
Nulce is incorrect. The census takers handwriting is very difficult
to read and sometimes they just get the whole name wrong. I looked at
the record and it did say "nulce." Incorrect. My grandmother's name
was Nula Mae Holt.
